This is old but classic. I would be surprised if anyone is required to read this book anymore. If you are reading it for coursework, then you are lucky that you are in some sort of linguistics classroom. Enjoy!

Delivers as promised

Book is an excellent introduction to research design for qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods designs. It explains all the components of a research design and walks you through each one, inclding the literature review, research question and hypotheses. Also, the first chapter goes through the different theoretical perspectives from which reseach proceeds, so you can understand the different paradigms. It also has lots of models, examples and exercises to work through. I used this book for a research proposal, and it guided me through the whole thing. The proposal was well accepted. So, I definately recommend this for any student to learn about research or anyone interested in putting together a good proposal, or an instructor who wants a good core text.

Your body needs this book

If you have a core, AND you live in the modern world, you need this book. While this book is addressed to diastasis recti, it's really for anyone (most all of us) who has experienced various body signals, from occasionally to frequently, such as back pain, incontinence (sneeze-pee to constant leakage) etc, that have come to be accepted as a normal part of aging. They are not; it's a WHOLE BODY issue, and spot treating symptoms (adult diapers, anyone?) is not the solution, especially for the long term. Diastasis Recti does a great job explaining the anatomy of the abdominal wall in easy-to-get language, and how it works in real life. It includes exercises that are designed for starting where your body is at - from small moves to medium to big - to help restore strength to your core, and empowers the reader to take control of their own body. And in true Katy Bowman style, it's a fun read, to boot. I'd order it now if I were you...

Worth Every Penny - I Love It!

I just finished reading this book and I absolutely love it. Finally a book about diastasis recti that clearly explains the biomechanical reasons why it's not going away. There are many stretches and exercises in this book and, at first glance, they look easy. Ha. They have been very challenging for me. I had no idea how tight my muscles were nor how much those tight muscles were pulling on my abdomen. I also had no idea how poor my alignment was - just working on that alone is challenging. But I feel like I am now headed in the right direction. Thank you, Katy, for your clear explanations, your humor (which makes this book fun to read), and for giving attention to this issue which affects so many. I feel hopeful now!
UPDATE: I've been following this program for almost 3 months and I am seeing improvement. DR is smaller and connective tissue has gone from deep to medium. My alignment has improved, too. It's much more automatic now,

Wish I could give this book more than 5 stars. I don't have DR but I do have a core (ha, ha!) & it's never been so strong. This is THE book for core strenghtening, hands down. Would love to see all PTs, sports trainers, etc. on board with the biomechanical model.

About the Author
Kenneth C. Louden is Emeritus Professor of Computer Science and a past chair of the Department of Computer Science at San Jose State University, Silicon Valley's primary supplier of graduates to the tech industry. He has written several texts and articles on advanced topics in computer science.

Kenneth A. Lambert is Professor of Computer Science and Head of the Department at Washington and Lee University. He has taught programming language design for 25 years and has been an active researcher in computer science education. Lambert has co-authored a series of introductory C++ textbooks with Douglas Nance and Thomas Naps and a series of introductory Java textbooks with Martin Osborne, and is the author of a new introductory Python textbook

Kindle edition is great!

I purchased the hard copy and kindle edition of this book. Unlike the reviews before me, I found the kindle edition to be the exact same as the hard copy. The code is readable and matches the hard copy. After reading the first 2 chapters, the book seems easy to understand and provides nice examples to facilitate comprehension.

Don't buy the Kindle edition

I bought the Kindle edition of this textbook, both to save money and to save lugging around another large book. The code samples did not translate well into the Kindle edition, and most of them appear as paragraphs of text, with the lines all run together. This, as you probably know, is a really unreadable way to understand code. Save yourself the trouble and buy the paper edition until this can be fixed.

Again, Cordelia Gray

To the best of my knowledge, P.D. James only wrote two books about her young female detective Cordelia Gray. That's unfortunate, because I enjoyed both of them very much, especially this one. It has all of the "classic" elements of the British murder mystery: the castle, an island, an oddly assorted company, a butler, an interesting wealthy man, assorted relatives, and a grisly murder. Cordelia must sort out everything in the end, and even though the ultiumate outcome is somewhat in doubt, there's rarely a dull moment throughout this book. You follow Ms. Gray's progress avidly, and try to keep up with what's going on around her to gather your own clues about the murder. I'll admit that I was shocked at the resolution of the mystery, and that's one of the reasons I enjoyed the book so much. If you haven't read Ms. James, start with "An Unsuitable Job For A Woman", the first Cordelia Gray mystery, and then progress to this work. You won't be disappointed!

Watch Your Face

As much as I love P.D.James and having read almost all of her books this one just didn't give me what I was looking for. I'm surprised because I love British mysteries and castles and monasteries and just the geography and lay of the land as James often describes it but in this work I felt too overwhelmed by it all and felt like I was reading Snow White or Hansel and Gretel or another of Grimm's fairy tales. I struggled to finish it and of course there were some parts better than others. I have previously loved Cordelia and the previous book was one of the best of P.D.James. Maybe it was just me. If you like James work, include this one in your reading but don't be surprised if you feel something doesn't feel right.

P.D. James makes an unwelcome departure

Cordelia Gray, the brave and endearing young private investigator who made her debut in P.D. James' AN UNSUITABLE JOB FOR A WOMAN, returns in the author's eighth whodunit, THE SKULL BENEATH THE SKIN. The title's from Webster, and it's a fitting one; the story literally reeks of the theater. Clarissa Lisle is a bitchy, fading actress determined to salvage her career as the star of an amateur production of Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi," staged in a restored Victorian theater on Courcy Island, just off the coast of Dorset. Lisle has been receiving mysterious poison-pen letters, death notes in the form of quotations from Shakespeare and Webster, and has hired Cordelia to discover their source. The castle on Courcy Island becomes the stage for a tense gathering of Clarissa's friends, relatives, and guests--each of whom, we learn, has excellent motive for killing the actress. When the death does inevitably occur, Cordelia finds herself left with a case of murder that she fully intends to--and does--unravel.
THE SKULL BENEATH THE SKIN may be the most stylish, lavishly mounted novel that James has written. It's an overflowing mixture of the elements of the detective/horror tale at its most clich�d--the closed circle of suspects in a Victorian castle on a small island serviced by a spooky, tight-lipped butler and his wife, a crypt filled with skulls, a collection of memorabilia from past murders, frightening knick-knacks in the shapes of human appendages...it's all gloriously entertaining, never for a minute even coming close to realism. And therein lies the fatal flaw of the novel.
P.D. James' novels are seldom been anything but realistic, but she seems to have broken the rule in THE SKULL BENEATH THE SKIN. The Gothic horror, portrayed in a darkly comic manner, clashes painfully with her finely drawn, introspective characters (except Clarissa Lisle, one of the few two-dimensional stereotypes who pop up in James' fiction) and flawlessly crafted prose. It's as if she's written two completely different novels, one a brilliant character study, the other a conventional ghost story, and meshed them together with little regard for the coherence of the result. Until now, James has done a marvelous job proving that the English mystery can make an extraordinarily fine mainstream novel; unfortunately, she's also shown that the magic combination can work only when her settings are serious and controlled. THE SKULL BENEATH THE SKIN is not serious. It's not too far from out-and-out comedy, and James' admirable but vain attempts to weave her fantastic set pieces and excessively necrophilic atmosphere into a profound work of fiction makes it even more funny.
Not that most readers will care. This is still an absorbing entertainment--substantial, cunningly plotted, and beautifully written. More discriminating readers will conclude that either THE SKULL BENEATH THE SKIN is a parody written by a skilled impersonator, or P.D. James has seen one Dracula movie too many.

Things are not always as they seem. Skim milk masquerades as cream.

As I progress through life, and accept that I'm not young any more, I also realize that the younger generations do not ingest books the way I do. If you look at the reviews for this book, especially at the 1 and 2 star ratings, you'll find a deplorable pattern. "It was too slow." No, you're not considering what you're reading. "The author is a racist." Definitely no, he's almost drawing a caricature of them to shine a great big spotlight on facism and bigotry in order to persuade the audience of just how evil these things are. "The ending was too abrupt." or "He obviously meant to write a sequel." No and no. After many thousands of words placed in thought provoking ways, the author challenges the audience to decide what the story means. This story was written in the 60s, and is set then as well. What if the Axis won World War II is the major premise behind the setting. The conflicts highlight the extreme to which Japanese and German cultures could have gone, and the possible effects of living in a land under the control of one, and strongly influenced by the other. Imagine the Japanese concept of place, mixing with facist bigotry, overlaid on oppressed Americans living in a totalitarian world. PKD thoroughly denounces facism, bigotry and xenophobia.

But the story is more than that. The plot is hidden from the reader as we see events from several points of view. And the narration ends with barely a paragraph of denouement. If you are not driven to contemplation about the meaning of life or the nature of reality by this work, you should read it again, slowly.

One of Dick's Finest Creations.

One of the greatest novels of th 20th century. I've been a PKD fan since the early 1980's, obsessively collecting his work, most of which at the time was out of print. It's safe to say that no person did more to shape my intellectual development as a teenager than Philip K. Dick. I am forever in his debt.

That said, TMitHC is a treasure. It distills a number of Dick's obsessions into a taut character study set against the backdrop of a world going even more mad. Each of the 6 'protagonists' here are searching for truth. Only a couple of them are capable of facing it dignity.

As with all of Dick's best work the world-building is efficient and brilliant. I re-read this recently to prepare myself for watching the new serial, and was reminded of just how good Dick's prose is. The casual racism of Mr. Childan, the inner strength of Juliana, the coldness of Joe Cinnadella. But, it is Mr. Tagomi who owns this novel. He is one of Dick's finest characters, at once pragmatic and idealistic. Mature and naive. The living embodiment of the Tao.

The ending matters both textually and thematically. It separates the characters into those who can face the reality of their world and those who cannot.

For those looking into PKD for the first time I highly recommend these books over all of the others (in my order of preference):

Others like Time Out of Joint, The Game-Players of Titan, Now Wait for Last Year, The Penultimate Truth and Galactic Pot Healer are fine diversions, but the books above are essential. VALIS is a difficult mess of a book. Timothy Archer is the only one of the 'trilogy' I actually enjoyed as a narrative.

An epic Masterpiece that can be appreciated by many!

I was putting off buying this due to it having reviews like "confusing ending" however when watched the series on Amazon I was amazed and stunned at the same time. And i figured with all books and movies/tv adaptations the book is always better.We always see the commercials on tv for the what 'ifs' about history what if the Nazis won the war whats if World War II ended entirely different. We don't know for sure how this would actually have turned out but PKD offers some amazing insight to what it would have been like.
Each character has there own unique persona and unique motives for what they are really out to get. Every character is masterfully developed. PKD doesn't just focus on the character's PKD is able to fully capture you imagination and create a beautifully horrid reality inside your mind as you read.
This is one of the books that you will read reread and still be wondering about what truly happened or what the book was really about. One of the most complex and inciting books I have read and loved so deeply in a long time. Overall if you like alternative-history or books with complex backgrounds and amazing story's you should be sure to read this.

Too many mistakes and errors in this book

Security 101 dictates the importance of an effective set of information security policies and procedures. The granddaddy of such books is Information Security Policies Made Easy by Charles Cresson Wood that contains over 1000 well-written security policies.
The importance of best practices for information security is easily understood in the post September 11 era, combined with the fact that more and more companies are connecting their corporate networks to untrusted public networks without the appropriate level of security and protection.
With such a need, Information Security Best Practices: 205 Basic Rules sounded like it could fill such a void. Unfortunately, the book suffers from a number of flaws. First, its organizations is not logical. The book starts chapter 1 with the topic of e-mail spam, while a fundamental topics such as network architecture is not dealt with until chapter 5.
The book contains numerous errors. While some are small, many others were rather significant. Innocuously, the author called the ICSA the NCSA, even though its name was changed over 4 years ago. Incorrectly, the book states the an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) will eliminate power surges along power lines. A UPS will provide protection from power surges, but can't eliminate them. Finally, the book states as a best practice to use halon for fire control, yet halon production was banned under the Clean Air Act of 1994.
The author has significant department of defense experience, which explains why the book would suggest security controls such as C2 and TEMPEST shielding. First off, the C2, from the Orange Book has been retired and replaced by the Common Criteria. Secondly, TEMPEST shielding is far too expensive for most companies, combined with the fact that the there are few individuals who are competent in Tempest technology in the private sector, since the specifics of TEMPEST are still classified.
Those looking for a good reference would be better served by reading Information Security Policies Made Easy or its less expensive cohort Writing Information Security Policies by Scott Barman (New Riders, 2001 ISBN: 157870264X)

This book had a lot of potential, but it has far too many mistakes.
It does not take into consideration corporate best practices.
There are better books out there, use them.

Excellent Book

I thought this book was very easy to read and understand. I must commend the author for making technical material so easy to understand even for a novice like myself. Everything I wanted to know about information security was in this book. I highly recommend it.
