An American who later married into the Spanish nobility, the author began her career as a "queen of international society" by working as a decoder for the OSS. Her book describes how she (nee Aline Griffith) was recruited by the OSS while working as a model at Hattie Carnegie's, trained in espionage, and sent to Madrid. Once there, says Romanones, she decoded secret messages, organized a chain of women spies, and mingled among the cream of Spanish society to ferret out information about Nazis and German sympathizers. The author also details her lifestyle among the rich and famous. Indeed, so active was her social life that one wonders how she had any time for business. A retired Spanish teacher recommends "The Spy Wore Red"...to ALL! (Eager Reader, Braintree, MA)

I first reviewed this book in 2004, but years later realized it somehow was not listed with my later reviews. For that reason, I am editing and reissuing it now. As a Spanish teacher, I recommended The Spy Wore Red to my high school students for years. Several students later spent college junior year in Spain, returning to tell me how much this book meant to them, appreciating it more following their sojourn there. Enjoying this thriller enabled them to catch glimpses of the old Spain in the new.

Reading and re-reading The Spy Wore Red is a wonderful experience. Most of your other reviewers agree, but there are two aspects they seem to miss: its the richness of traditional Spanish culture, and the book's importance in documenting the gradually-changing role of U.S. women. The young Aline Griffiths, was a real person who later, as an author married to a Spanish nobleman, somewhat fictionalized her true-to-life experiences. A bright, remarkably-well educated, beautiful young American at the beginning of the 1940's, she departed from traditional women's work as a high-fashion New York model to take a daring, adventurous, downright-dangerous job spying for the Allies in just-post-Civil-War Spain. During World War II, Spain was not yet beginning to evolve into what it is today, not yet healed from its own war wounds from the late 1930's, an isolated nation still cut off from modernization, enabling the author to give us a picture of a far more traditional Spanish culture, during a repressive regime in many ways determined to keep it so. Aline Griffiths' vantage point was unique, an outsider accepted into many segments of Spanish society, trusted because of her beauty and charm.

World War II began as the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) ended, so Aline Griffiths arrived as huge social changes were about to occur. This book provides a superb peek into the "old" Spain, the Spain of high romance and extraordinarily traditional, now-antiquated values. Yet it is described in context of a delightfully novel-like autobiographical tale. Although it reads better than most spy fiction, one can take notes on Spanish culture on virtually every page. It is engrossing, culture-rich, and shows a young American girl from Pearl River, New York, doing the kinds of things of which only a grownup Nancy Drew type might have dreamed.

About the Author
H.H. JIGME PHUNTSOK (1933-2004) was a prominent teacher in the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism who was recognized as a terton (treasure revealer) and renowned for his mastery of Dzogchen. Unlike many Tibetan masters who fled to India and the West, Jigme Phuntsok remained in China throughout the Cultural Revolution and played a major role in maintaining and reviving Buddhism in the region. He established a nonsectarian Buddhist community called Larung Gar near the town of Sertar in China's Sichuan Province, where he taught thousands of students, many of Han Chinese ethnicity.

KHENPO SODARGYE is one of the primary leaders of the Buddhist academy at Larung Gar and was H.H. Jigme Phuntsok's chief translator. He has traveled extensively to the United States, Canada, Germany, France, Holland, the United Kingdom, and throughout Asia to offer teachings, and he continues to teach widely at schools and universities in China and abroad. He is also the founder of numerous Chinese schools and charitable organizations.

Would-be social butterflies will get encouragement but little inspiration from this not quite scintillating self-help primer. Fine, a conversation consultant, insists that small talk is the necessary overture to deeper communication, the key to generating business leads and dates and a pathway to a richer life in which strangers are magically transformed into acquaintances. She covers such cocktail-party conundrums as how to spot "approachable" interlocutors, how to make introductions, how to butt into an intriguing conversation, resuscitate a flagging one and bail out of a boring one, and how to resist one-uppers, know-it-alls, motormouths and other abusers of talk. Given the ingrained human reluctance to talk to strangers, will, not technique, is the real issue. Much of the book is taken up with motivational pep-talks to get readers to initiate contact (one agonizing exercise suggests "walk through the mall and just say hello to ten people as you pass them"); in a world where everyone feels at a loss for words, Fine argues, saying virtually anything makes one a "hero." Unfortunately, it doesn't necessarily make one a great conversationalist. The heart of Fine's methodology consists of long lists of icebreakers and inviting questions that she instructs readers to memorize and regurgitate as needed to jump-start and sustain conversations, and these read like rather bad small-talk-dull ("How has the internet affected your life?"), stilted ("Do you have a personal motto or creed?") and awkward ("Describe an embarrassing moment you've had."). Tongue-tied readers can benefit from her pointers and exhortation, but one hopes they will think a little harder before they speak.

These two books treat similar subjects, but the contrasts are significant. One covers the entire landscape of speaking, whereas the other focuses just on "small talk." The title of Speak from the Heart describes the book's very solid premise. Emmy Award-winning broadcaster and motivational speaker Adubato emphasizes the importance of being genuine as he attempts to cover every conceivable speaking situation, including public speaking, private conversations, group discussions, and listening. He guides readers in the use of eye contact, developing a conversational style, and being comfortable with their message. Despite many charming personal anecdotes and stories drawn from other sources, this book remains a heavy read. Ironically, while Adubato tells us to make a connection with our audience rather than to "cover the material," he does a much better job of covering the material than of connecting. In contrast, Fine fully engages her audience. She involves readers in the discussion and gives lists of lines people can use to start, maintain, or end a conversation. She discusses conversation topics and how to use them and also includes quizzes, throws in a poem, and scatters a few cartoons to break up the text. Originally released as an audiocassette in 1997, this work comes across much like one of her seminars on small talk. The Fine Art of Small Talk does everything that Speak from the Heart says should be done. Adubato's book is best for academic libraries or large public and business libraries. How to face social functions without a stiff drink

This book has been most helpful to me. I hate public functions due to the witless small talk I am subjected to. I love to listen to people's stories when we can move beyond the mundane, but have wondered how to move women beyond their current diet or workout regimen, addictions or my Super Child's life long accomplishments.(Potty training is boring after 3 minutes and your grandchild's 10 knock knock jokes...please ) It is nice to know what is an appropriate subject to introduce. Although this book is more geared to work related gatherings, how to prep for the onslaught is universal. Lots of good pointers in an easy to use format. Thank you Debra Fine.

This useful and concise book contains entertaining anecdotes, elements and suggestions that are immediately actionable, confidence builders and lists of topics and questions that can be used to get a conversation started. It covers everything from networking events to dating - airports and air time. It is a good book, a useful resource, and was an insightful read.

This is a very clever novel, and although it features the usual medical-thriller device, the deadly conspiracy, it's a far cry from the Robin Cook–style conglomeration of cardboard characters and chase scenes. This one is more in the Michael Palmer vein: well-drawn characters, a smart story, plenty of suspense, and even a little commentary on the nature of the medical profession. Excellent second novel

I'm not usually a fan of medical thrillers, but gave Joshua Spanogle's Isolation Ward a try and was glad I did. This guy can write! Hero Nate McCormick is a great flawed protagonist with a unique voice and someone who is easy to identify with. In Flawless, McCormick is back and Spanogle has managed to avoid the sophomore curse, returning with a novel just as good (if not better) than his first.

Nate has relocated to the West Coast to pursue a relationship with the girlfriend he reconnected with during his initial case (chronicled in Ward). He's jobless and hasn't found an apartment and his aimless state has started to wear on the burgeoning relationship. Into this state of things comes an old friend from his student days who wants Nate's help with something. But before Nate can find out what it is, his friend Murph is murdered, along with his wife and two children, plunging Nate into a complicated mystery swirling around a biotech company in the South San Francisco hills, coupled with Chinese gangsters and a series of photographs of women and men, faces disfigured by an agressive facial cancer.

Nate is warned off, his girlfriend is attacked, and several of the people in the photographs are killed in a variety of shocking ways, but McCormick just can't give up, feeling he owes something to the friend he lost track of. This is an excellent, fast-moving novel with three-dimensional, believable characters. Nate suffers for his investigation and his feelings of rage and helplessness are palpable. And his life continues to develop on the sidelines, in the manner of the best current detective fiction. Spanogle is a truly talented writer and I'm very much looking forward to his next novel. Flawless is very highly recommended!

3.25 stars: Fun page-turner for Robin Cook fans

I purchased this off-the-shelf because Booklist on the cover promised it "Could give Michael Chricton a run for his money. Skilled storytelling" and because it sounded like a unique concept - "Perfect patients, perfect victims, a medical nightmare come true".

With a likeable, but flawed main character who uses humor to offset stress, page-turning action, a host of REALLY, REALLY bad guys and bureaucratically challenged government agents, there's no doubt that the "Skilled storytelling." part is true.

There are a few flaws that keep this book for me from being more than just a slightly above average, fun page-turner.

1. Over the top characters and action - it's fun to read over-the-top sometimes, but while I liked and despised appropriate characters I never really cared when something good or bad happened to any of them.

2. The cover and title of the book (not to mention the blurb on the back) gives away what it takes Nate our hero - 289 pages to figure out. Fortunately, enough page-turning action and a sense of how you don't really know how it will all play out keeps you reading up to that point. It would be better if you didn't know exactly what every clue meant, so long before him.

3. Big over-the-top ending. It's a pet peeve of mine lately - how decent thrillers turn into cartoonish VERY, VERY BAD GUYS against GOOD GUY with impossible odds doing things that stretch far, far beyond the believable.

Bottom Line: Spanogle weaves a decent tale that will keep you turning the pages. He's not the next Micheal Chricton, though. He's more like the next Robin Cook - with his fun, over-the-top medical thrillers. Surprisingly good thriller with character

I read his previous book, and was a little annoyed by the main character's persona, but "Nate" and every other part of the book was very much improved. Easily the best book I have read this year. Deep and well developed... more believable and not a plot that you can figure out quickly.

I highly recommend the audiobook on CD or at [...]... Scott Brick really brings this book to life.
