A great resource for students and practicing managers!

Amason's book on Strategic Management made the concept of actually managing strategically come to life for my students. Embedded cases as examples of some of the best companies in the world make concepts, terms and theories come to life. Whether you a new to strategic management or want a refresher - Strategic Management from Theory to Practice - accomplishes just that - takes theory to practice. It is different than traditional textbooks that teach about strategic management, Amason's text actually explains the most important part - the "how" of strategic management.

I have orderd several books from Amazon in the past and have been very satisfied. You guys dropped the ball on this one

The book arrived as promised, however it was quite smudged on the outer cover. It looked as if someone who had been handling charcoal rubbed their hands all over the outer cover. Also, the spine seemed to be broken. I have orderd several books from Amazon in the past and have been very satisfied. You guys dropped the ball on this one! I ordered this book new and it appears it had been used or severely mistreated!

FINALLY

FINALLY! A translation of The Inferno that I not only understand, but REALLY like. It's evident that one of Salvidio's goals was to make Dante's classic work accessible to today's reader. I would also add that the way he did the footnotes is really helpful -- further eveidence that he has a genuine interest in the reader's enjoyment of something he feels passionate about. I plan on reading Salvidio's other translations as well. I'm happy to say that the "classics" are no longer foreign to me, thanks to Frank Salvidio.

Brilliant Translation of Dante's "Inferno."

Employing an easy to read parlance replete with witty annotations and insight into the medieval and modern Italian man, Mr. Salvidio proffers an entertaining yet erudite rendition of this classic. Moreover, it is direct and clear.

I do regret not having this fresh voice when Dante was required reading for it flows flawlessly. This translation should be any Classics professor's first choice for his students.

Amazing artwork, and passable story.

I'm actually getting kinda tired of fairy-tale combo stories. Sometimes we will get an Into the Woods or A Wolf Among Us, but sometimes well get sterile and repetitive schlock like Once Upon a Time or Shrek 3. Fairy Quest (story wise) is kinda in the middle (definitely above average). At times it takes itself a little to seriously. I don't think we need to ever see another fairy-tale "dystopia" anymore. But like I said in the description, the artwork is nothing short of incredible! The colors, the lines and simplistic designs really bring a lot of life. I am interested to keep reading.

A few troubling similarities....

I think this is a good summary of my feelings about this book: I'm glad my public library has a copy of the second book for me to read, because I'd not have paid money to continue.

I got this book from a Humble Bundle of Kickstarted comics. I think my biggest criticism is how much this reminds me of the "Fable" comics. All fable characters live together in one large world divided into little sub-lands for each fable, and all are under threat of a totalitarian conqueror? Yep. But the motivations are at least different: Grimm, who lords over this book, is ensuring that the fables do not deviate from their story, going so far as to brainwash them (rather literally) into submission. It is implied that fairy tales which deviate begin to degrade and corrupt, which I hope becomes relevant in the second book. That bit is intriguing.

Just as in the Fable comics, the Big Bad Wolf is a secret good guy, and we get a brief glimpse at his motivations. I do so hope that's as far as the similarities to Bigsby go, though, because Red is a little girl here, and...no.

So, I'd say, check your library first. You might get lucky enough for a free read (or at least a tax-payer paid one).

Love the story...a real heart felt story that really speaks to someone like me.
My personal life story is just a taste of what you see in the story...
If I told you my life story...you would think some things were not original,
that I might have copied Paul Jenkins...
yet some things are just reality to me.
(I dealt with exotic animals...) I love animals...This should be read with an open mind,
feel a warm sense of love between these main charters.
I personally had a real personal connection.

About the Author
H. L. Mencken was a journalist in the first half of the 20th century, reporting on social and political matters such as the Scopes Trial. He was the editor of The Smart Set and The American Mercury and the author of over two dozen books, including The American Language, Happy Days, Newspaper Days, and Heather Days. He was also the translator of Nietzsche's The Anti-Christ.

Flawed but useful

The first thing that needs to be said about this book is that, as an exposition of Nietzsche's philosophy, it's profoundly flawed. Of course it doesn't claim to be exhaustively comprehensive, and today most of its readers will be drawn as much to the author and his interpretation as to the subject itself. But here the interpretation effectively buries the subject. In his own lifetime Nietzsche observed that in most cases "whoever thought he had understood something of me had made up something out of me after his own image (Ecce Homo III I)," and such is the case of Mencken.

Symptomatic of this is Mencken's tendency to blithely dismiss (as "sheer lunacy", p.85, or "absurd", p.154) whatever in Nietzsche he fails to properly understand or finds to be at odds with his own reading. But the main problem is not so much in this, nor in his omissions, nor in his over-simplifications, nor even in his errors as such; as the introduction quite rightly notes, Mencken is "dead wrong" in equating Nietzsche's will to power with Schopenhauer's will to existence. The real problem is that, in so thoroughly misunderstanding this & other such key aspects of Nietzsche's philosophy, Mencken inevitably, and substantially, misunderstands that philosophy as a whole.

In this particular case, whereas a -higher- and -fuller- existence is seen by Nietzsche as the aim of the will to power, and hence the greatest good, Mencken's misinterpretation takes existence in itself to be the goal (eg, pp.81-83) and thereby interprets the overman as the man most fit to survive the Darwinian struggle for existence (pp.67, 79, etc.). In fact, Nietzsche repeatedly insisted that it is the mediocre who are most successful as far as mere survival goes ("the last man lives longest" Zarathustra Prologue 5; "species do -not- grow in perfection; the weak prevail over the strong again & again" Twilight of Idols IX 14), and by contrast frequently laments the fragility of the higher man ("the ruination of the higher man, of souls of a stranger type, is the rule" Beyond Good and Evil 269, see also 276 & 62, inter alia).

Another example, the more lamentable for the sheer intellectual laziness it represents on Mencken's part, is his chapter on "Truth". Now, Nietzsche's critiques of objectivity and of the limits of conscious reason, as notably in BGE & TOI, are among the most brilliant and influential things he ever wrote. Yet Mencken wastes half the chapter in a pedantic general discussion of truth, then finally turns to Nietzsche by announcing his views are too complicated to be summarized in the available space, proceeds to misrepresent them, and concludes with the patently false assertion that Nietzsche was a moral ("atheistic") determinist.

More unfortunate still, and far less forgiveable coming after the century of further Nietzsche scholarship which has been undertaken since Mencken first wrote, is that this book's introduction, which is supposed to be there to catch Mencken's errors, cheers him on in this one, as well as as in others. Let it be noted too, in passing, how absurd it it when the author of this introduction complains about the lack of clarity in Nietzsche's style--nevermind the countless passages (the Gay Science 381 is especially instructive, but see also Zarathustra, BGE, EH...) in which Nietzsche addresses the issue of style, connecting it with his conception of the order of rank. In other words, his style is a reflection of his philosophy and can't be criticized in isolation from it, any more than one can speak of Plato's use of dialectic as a mere question of style.

As a final point, this particular edition of Mencken's work is further unsatisfactory in its sloppy editing and in its lack of corrections for those facts Mencken gives about Nietzsche's life which are objectively wrong (generally he was as accurate as possible for his time, but since them far more material has come to light--about Nietzsche's relationship with Lou Salom�, for example, not to mention that awful sister of his, who in Mencken's time was still posing as the--largely unquestioned--voice of authority in all things concerning her brother).

To be fair one might find this book worthwhile for a number of reasons; as an example of how Nietzsche was often understood when his influence was first making itself felt; as one of the earliest works of an exceptional man in his own right; and there are even parts which do serve their intended purpose quite well (I think Nietzsche would have entirely approved of the chapter on Education). Finally I myself found Mencken useful here as a sort of intellectual sparring partner; having read a good deal of Nietzsche, I wanted to sort out my own thoughts by putting them up against those of another intelligent but non-specialist reader. So the book does have its uses, just not the one it claims to.

Good as an example of early Mencken

As an example of H.L. Mencken's nascency as a serious writer and critic, this biography of the philosopher Nietzsche is invaluable to anyone interested in the writings of either man. The introduction by the editor is insightfully critical but does fail to emphasize the context in which Mencken himself held certain views controversial by today's accepted standards. Mencken's interpretations of Nietzsche's ideas tend toward social Darwinism. Especially where he is writing about the early life of Nietzsche, Mencken's outline is better than any other book in English on the subject. But Mencken mixes and matches concepts arising from Dionysus and Apollo too loosely, sometimes to the point of miscomprehension of Nietzsche's position, and sometimes by using their Roman name equivalents. All in all, Mencken is thorough, conscientious and clear in his expose on the great German philosopher.

Extremely helpful for graduate clinicians

Unless you feel like pouring over your graduate textbooks to find detailed treatment information for each communication disorder, then this is the book for you. This book will not provide you with forms or step-by-step treatment programs but it will tell you what to look for in a communication disorder and ideas on how to address it in therapy. It is just a condensed guide so don't expect it to be an extremely comprehensive, detailed treatment book.

One can never say that a person is absolutely mature and at the end of his or her maturing process but one can say that there are certain steps in life most people pass or go through. Also Jane Eyre betakes herself on the journey of life and in the novel the reader can watch the different steps she passes and accompanies her. On the one hand they can observe her behaviour objectively, her changes, her maturing process, her fears and challenges in a distant and objective way. They see how other people manage their life and are made aware of their changes without directly being a part of it. On the other hand the reader is able to identify with Jane Eyre and imagine how she must feel because, as I said before, every person changes during their life and experiences certain problems and challenges. Although those must not necessarily be exactly the same as Jane experiences, we can feel with her. There is just a certain amount of feelings a human being is able to feel and as we, together with Jane Eyre, Charlotte Bront� and many others, belong to the same species we feel similar for example about things like love. [...] I think it is exactly this point of identifying with the heroine that makes Jane Eyre such a popular novel and that also draw my attention to it.
