Good for anatomy, not about biomechanics

I have mixed feelings about this one. It is a really nice anatomy book, so if you are interested in the names and locations of the body parts involved in locomotion, I would recommend this book. I'm a vet and have a lot of horse anatomy books and I think this is one of the better ones in this regard. However, I interpreted the title to mean that there would be discussions of actual biomechanics of motion, and this is not the focus of this book.

My new favorite book

This is not the most detailed anatomy book ever, but it makes a great amount of information very understandable. The paintings of the bones and musculature are quite engaging. Studying this book will let almost anyone have a working understanding of the horse's body; and therefore, why some things work and some things don't. It also has a helpful section on conditioning and stretching.

Forays into the Theory of Physics

Marian Apostol demonstrates here again to me that he is a tempered director of research, neither afraid of orthodoxy nor avoidant of novelty. I am satisfied by the ample demonstration here that he does not fall into the trap of establishment anti-intellectualism. He does not "Shut up and calculate." Instead he is eager to relate each of these articles and the whole collection to the philosophical quest that goes back to the classical Greeks: what is change?

The great theme in these forays is the variational principle; for real physics, the action is at a stationary point. He can then, for instance, show how inevitably results from this classical principle convert into the domain of quantum effects; the Unruh effect (the temperature of an apparently accelerated vacuum) is implied as a matter of course. I am reminded for myself that this variational principle is equivalent to the main result in the physics of geometry, that sources of gravity travel along geodesics.

This collection of essays makes for an important resource after the main text in an advanced course on theoretical physics.

The Ultimate UNARMED Combat

The Short:

If you love unarmed combat, dream of racing chariots and fighting in gladiatorial games, wish to sail the seas, love Oriental Adventures, need more spell options, or want to break out of the base class mold; this is the book for you.

If you think your party's human shields ought to wield an actual weapon in the classic D&D environment, prepare for disappointment.

The Long:

To say there is a lot of "love" for the monk in this book is an understatement, it's a full blown obsession. More than 1/4 of the feats are related to unarmed combat (66 Unarmed Strike prereq feats, 10 Imp Grapple, 5 Imp Trip prereqs) and 21 new monk weapons make their debut (out of 40). However, if you are playing a weapon wielding fighter type (paladin, ranger, barbarian, etc.), there is not much love here and the class in most need of Ultimate Combat "love", the base fighter, gets a severe case of frostbite. Other classes not typically consider fighter types (alchemist, magus, wizard, cleric, rogue, druid, etc.) get equal or greater attention (new archetypes for every base class, numerous new feature specific feats, 29 pages of new Spells). It's seems the Ultimate Magic spillover landed here and all the truly martial classes paid for it.

My biggest complaint about the feats, besides too many are tailored towards monks, is expense. Only 12 feats need no prereq (4 require Teamwork). Most feats require 2 or more prereqs and its not uncommon for a "base" feat to have 5 prereqs (stats, class features, skills, race, race feature, and/or a BAB). Too many require specific class features like arcane spell casting, channeling, poison use, bardic performance, hex, wild shape, etc. encouraging multi-classing. Only 1 feat requires any levels in fighter while 21 feats use Monk levels as a possible prereq, usually giving access EARLIER than the BAB option would allow any fighter type to take it. There are simply too many reasons to stop advancing as or to never become a weapon wielding fighter.

Be warned, this is not a stand alone book. Some of the material requires ownership of non-base books, for example the Alchemist (Ultimate Magic) or Cavalier (Advanced Players Guide) Archetypes or the Elemental Fist (APG) or Improved Dirty Trick (APG) feats. If you don't intend to own either, then these pages and feats are a waste.

Mainly for Monks & Optional Rules

Given that combat is an essential part of Pathfinder, I was expecting a substantial supplement to the game that addressed the lingering weak points in the combat system, fighter-style classes, weapons and so on. While this book was a noble attempt at this, it did fall short.

As other reviewers have noted, it is very heavily focused on unarmed combat, which is great for people who are playing monks or who focus on that. However, the material for the other classes and other aspects of combat are somewhat less robust. Also, as other reviewers noted, it looks like some of the Ultimate Magic leftovers got reheated in this work-which should have used the space for the fighter-style classes.

The book does add some optional rules (and rules for guns), but none of these really add much to the Pathfinder game nor does it address the relative lameness of the fighter when compared to other classes. While my players did get this book, we have yet to actually use anything from it.

Hopefully Paizo will come out with an Ultimate Real Combat book that will do what this book should have done.

Excellent book

The only downside to any of the Pathfinder products I have bought is the actual quality of the construction. It seems I am being more careful with the books a lot sooner than with my old 3.5 books. As a matter of fact, none of my 3.5 books are as in the condition that my Pathfinder books are in, and they are a LOT older.

Other than that, this book, like almost all the "ultimate" books, is critical to gameplay. If you are on the fence about buying it, get it now...

A slow burn that just gets hotter and hotter until it's on FIRE!!!

As I started reading, I thought to myself, "There is NO WAY I'm going to stick around for this flirtation between a billionaire and a supermarket cook." Three minutes later, I was hooked and couldn't stop reading all the way to the unexpected cliffhanger that has me ACHING for the next book... as in, NOW, please!!!!

The relationship between Micah and Nori is like nothing I've read before. Micah is rich and good-looking. Busty blondes are like candy to him... cheap and gone quickly... until he's WRECKED by the presence of the sassy curvy chef who's totally not his usual type. She whips his usual "game" right back at him with a spicy sarcasm that only makes him want her more. The verbal sparring is delightful and hilarious with a supremely sexy undertone that only builds. And builds. And builds.

I'm not going to give it away, but it all stokes into a fire that's unstoppable and HOTTTT!!! Can't wait for Book 2.

Shelby Mitchell has outdone herself with this one! This was unique: a romance written from the male's point of view. Ingenious! Extremely well written and funny, I couldn't put the book down until I was finished. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Just bummed that it won't be out until March!

Actionable Content, Sage Advice from Advertising and Marketing Experts

I received the Kindle edition of this book from Net Galley for considering to write a review. (The edition I reviewed was a pre-release version and the image below is from that file. What you see there is no longer relevant but I cannot remove the image.)

I own two other Perry Marshall books (Google AdWords and 80/20 Sales and Marketing) so I was looking forward to reading this one on Facebook. Also, until I read this book I knew little about advertising on Facebook.

Here is my feedback divided into four categories.

1. Direct marketing. Much of your success in using FB is going to depend on how good you are at writing advertising copy. The authors go into detail about direct marketing best practices and then apply these to the unique features that FB gives us to create and manage campaigns. There are also numerous comparisons here to Google AdWords which will help those familiar with that platform get up to speed that much more quickly.

2. Applicability. There are many social networks, each with their own unique audience profile and community protocols. The first question any marketer needs to ask him or herself is whether that social network is a match for a particular business. They address this up front in Chapter 2 and in great detail. It's the kind of knowledge that could save you a lot of trouble and money. (Actually, you might want to try to understand this before even buying the book...too bad it is beyond the sample size to read it but you can also visit IsFBforME.com as a starting point.)

3. Style and presentation. The reading is easy, conversational, and to the point. No fluff. Again, those familiar with the AdWords book will be right at home with this book. In this regard I think the print book has a leg up on the ebook. There is so much information that you'll find yourself bouncing back and forth in the book which is much easier to do in print.

4. On-going support. Like any book on a fast moving tech topic, the information is bound to get dated quickly. In fact, in mid-November, just a couple weeks after publication, FB announced changes to how promoted posts are handled. To help combat this problem the authors maintain a web page that offers a way to get updates. This sort of on-going support isn't something you'll find with many of the other books on the topic, at least at this level and quality of presentation.

The volume of content here is a bit overwhelming, but if Facebook is a key part of your business or brand, you'll find the advice and strategies first class.

Great book for beginners who want to create a quick ad. Not comprehensive enough for more skilled advertisers.

This was a pretty good book., especially for beginners. It provides great definitions and detailed screenshots. The chapter title and some of the content was a little gimmicky, but there's good information to get started. The book spends a lot more time on the details of Facebook advertising (images, bidding, etc.) than on the fundamentals, executing a campaign, but it was still a great book and one that I would recommend for beginners who are seeking to get started with a quick ad on Facebook.

This book was not as great as I expected, FB changes so quickly that it is already out of date even though it was published in Jan. Due to this a website link is offered to see the updates, but it's more a ploy to constantly bombard your inbox with email to self promote the Perry Marshall brand, as is some of the other links suggested. There were some good tips and information, but overall I didn't get the nuts and bolts as it suggests by the title "Ultimate Guide".

Jonathan Schwabish is a senior research associate at the Urban Institute's Income and Benefits Policy Center. He is also a member of the Institute's communication team, specializing in data visualization and presentation design. He has published widely in economics journals, including the National Tax Journal, the Journal of Human Resources, and the Journal of Economic Perspectives. He is the coauthor, with Robert Haveman and Andrew Bershadker, of Human Capital in the United States from 1975 to 2000: Patterns of Growth and Utilization (2006). About the Author
GILLIAN SANSON is a women's health educator, researcher and author. She was menopause educator for the New Zealand Family Planning Association Northern Region from 1996 to 2001 and is currently a guest educator for organizations companies and groups including Women's Health Action Trust NZ. Mid-Life Energy and Happiness (Penguin Books NZ) was published in 1999 in NZ, the UK and Australia. The Osteoporosis Epidemic : Well Women and the Marketing of Fear (Penguin Books NZ 2001) challenges common misconceptions about osteoporosis and provides valuable knowledge on how to create and maintain bone health. In 2003 she toured and lectured in the United States and Canada in association with the release of The Myth of Osteoporosis (MCD Century Publications). Her work has received international recognition and endorsement and was the subject of a 20/20 documentary in NZ in 2001. Gill lives in Auckland, New Zealand.

Orthopedic Surgeon Viewpoint

I am an orthopedic surgeon with no ties to pharmaceutical companies. This book minimizes a large and growing problem. Fragility fractures are difficult to treat. They require special techniques for handling in the operating room. They don't hold implants even though special types of implants are being designed that might help in the future. Fragility fractures recur with a downward spiral of disability and death following the initial fracture. She correctly states that "only" 14% of otherwise healthy women die from fracture related complications in the first year after a hip fracture. The word "only" is her word...14% a huge death rate for healthy people regardless of age and most are less than 80. She blames doctors for killing patients and says 14% death rate is acceptable in this disease? That's not the doctors, it's the disease. Osteopororis robs people of an active lifestyle. Look at her daughter who has six fractures by age 25. How could she deny that's not a problem?
She correctly quotes a research study by DM Black showing that alendronate decreased fracture rate by 50% but the placebo group had 2.2% fractures and the alendronate group had 1.1% for an absolute fracture reduction of 1%. She belittles that but fails to recognize that this study was 3 years only. A 50% fracture reduction over 30 years is highly meaningful. Women have a 16% fracture risk between ages 50 and 80. A 50% reduction of fracture rate over that period of time would be substantial and life-saving for thousands of women. Short term studies should not be extrapolated to represent the true impact of treatment.
I do agree that nutrition can do more if people would pay attention to other nutrients besides calcium and vitamin D. She got that right, but osteoporosis is not a trivial problem and pharmactutical companies do help lots of people enjoy better lives.

This book is essential reading for anyone diagnosed with (or to be tested for) osteoporosis or osteopenia. It examines with thoughtfulness and great knowledge the process from DEXA scan to diagnosis to medication, raising crucial questions every step of the way. Just as HRT was pushed as a panacea by almost all doctors for years, only to turn out to cause the very heart disease and cancer it was supposed to help, so Sanson shows that this huge multi-billion-dollar osteoporosis industry is built on one questionable premise after another. The DEXA scan results cannot show the strength--the quality--of bone, a crucial factor. As for bone density, which it does measure, there is little or no correlation between bone density and fracture. Most older people who fracture have normal bone density or mildly low. The whole idea of measuring elderly women's bones against the standard of those of young women (possibly athletes) in their prime is itself questionable. Sanson shows how truly small the gains from bisphosphonates are, how deceiving the percentages presented, and how serious the side effects. This full story of the drugs is just starting to come out now, after the certitudes with which doctors proscribed Fosamax, Actonel, and Forteo just a few years ago. She takes every detail of what women are told and exposes it to the light of day. Consider the terror generated by the endlessly repeated claim that hip fracture is very frequent in the elderly and is a death sentence. Sanson counters by evidence and good sense that those who fracture hips are preponderantly the very old, often in their late 80s and 90s, and that those of die of it are likely to have many other illnesses, with poor vision and often dementia as well, perhaps alone in nursing homes; but that a fairly healthy elderly person will recover. Sanson checks out Vitamin D, Calcitonin, Strontium--gives a whole chapter to the confusing but crucial subject of calcium (not a good solution)--gives a wise exercise overview--and thinks reducing the risks of falling is most important of all to prevent fractures. She wants us to question physicians, and to accept that aging is not a disease. Sanson's whole family was diagnosed with osteoporosis years ago, and she had to decide whether to permit her children to be medicated, so her relation to the researching of this subject began with that urgency. For years a professional medical health writer, she approaches it with an independence that is as rare as it is precious. If this condition is of any concern to you, you must read this book!

Saved Myself

I broke my leg 8 months ago after falling while scurrying across a wet, and newly waxed, floor, while trying to save a cup of coffee and laptop at the same time. Recently, I had a bone mineral density (BMD) test, and my doctor prescribed Fosamax, I decided I needed to do a little research. This book and Dr. Susan Ott's web page provided all the information I needed.

I think I saved my life! According to the risk factors in the book and the BMD test, I'm not a high risk! I'm 58, 130 lbs., very active (Zumba, skiing, gardening, etc), eat a healthy diet (no soda for years, very little dairy, and lots of protein & veggies, mostly local), and tan very easily. After reading this book, I am absolutely convinced that taking any of those biphosphonates would be a very bad idea! Thankfully, I decided to do the research before following my doctor's advice.

After reading the book, I went back to the doctor. She was not familiar with the book, and claimed, that as a general practitioner, she's not as knowledgeable as specialists. I asked her about the Z scores on my test. She said she doesn't refer to those. I asked for a blood test to determine the level of vitamin D. I also wanted the details of my BMD test. Well, my level of D is 33. The avg. is 40. I'm taking 2000 IU a day of vitamin D, plus what I get in my diet.

Without this book, I would know nothing about the 16 risk factors, the different brands and effects of biphosphonates, the BMD test history and $$ involved, other tests, and other osteoporosis studies. Like I said, I think I saved my life!
