Changing your thoughts, changing your life

This excellent compilation of essays by James Allen truly holds the key to success, amongst other things! I feel so inspired after reading this book, so ready to put into practice what this powerful, little book is teaching. This "classic" has been around since the turn of the century and it seems to be even more relevant in today's stressful and competitive society. I underlined so many wonderful and inspiring passages that I intend to refer to on a daily basis. As Allen states, "a man is literally what he thinks", or as the saying goes, garbage in, garbage out! Or put another way, "All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts."
I have learned that I cannot blame others for my life, or my state of affairs - they are my creation, the end product of my thoughts and actions. Allen states that man makes or unmakes himself by the thoughts he keeps and cultivates. Man is truly is his own worst enemy!
I really resonated to his quote on fear, "Thoughts of doubt and fear never accomplish anything, and never can. They always lead to failure. Purpose, energy, power to do, and all strong thoughts cease when doubt and fear creep in." How profound and how true. How we let fear run our lives - again proving how powerful our thoughts can be. Allen further expounds by saying, "He who has conquered doubt and fear has conquered failure."
The garden of our mind is only cultivated by us. What kind of crop we want to consistently yield is solely determined on our positive, enriching, and encouraging thoughts or on our doubting, destructive and negative ones. We alone hold the key to our future, and our success, and our attainments in life. We can either have a feast or a famine - it is only up to us.
This highly inspirational book cannot help but to motivate you in some degree. I feel like I have been given the keys to a door that was once rusty and would not open, but now will yield freely in my hand. Another great quote is, "The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart - this you will build your life by, this you will become." This is one book that you will want to keep constantly by your side, especially for those times when you get discouraged, or when the road seems rough. Just reading one page will have you having a change of heart, with its motivation putting you back on that right path.
This book is a MUST read if you are desiring to change your negatives into positives! The power of the mind is incredible - in all areas of our life!

Don't buy this particular edition!

The one star has NOTHING to do with the content of this wonderful publication, it goes without saying that anyone who has stumbled upon the genius of Allen's masterpiece knows full well that the truth is what it is, i.e. this book is sublime mastery. No, my one star simply refers to this DeVorss imprint, this veritable 'mini-book'. Sadly nowhere on the page was it explained that this was a MINI version, a pamphlet indeed. My advice, pay the extra 2~300 yen and get yourself a 'proper' copy - one that will stand up in your bookshelf. Thank you.

What Are You Thinking This New Day?

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "A man is what he thinks about all day long..." We are...we really, really are. But the sad fact of the matter is, most of us do not really know what we are thinking. In fact, I would say that most of us aren't really thinking at all. Most of us are just operating on unconscious reactions to things.

Does this make you a little nervous?

It should...but...don't get too nervous...don't go too much in a panic. If there is something from this review that I want you to remember the most, is this:

WHAT THOUGHT HAS DONE, THOUGHT CAN UNDO!!

Think about this for the next 25 years of your life. Meditate upon this powerful Truth. Who you are is simply the residual effect of what you have thought about in the past. This is is a new day! This is a new opportunity for you to turn EVERYTHING around! If you have been ill or sick, now is your time to claim health and wellness. If you have been experiencing lack or limitation, now is the accepted time to claim wealth and abundance. You see, the universe never holds anything back from you. Never! There is only a stream of well-being in the universe...you just need to come into alignment with it...and we do this with our thoughts...we do this with our feelings...we do this with the images we are holding in mind.

Think about only that which you desire to attract. Feel the feelings of how it would be to have those things you want to attract. Imagine having those things, those experiences, that beautiful, abundant, healthy, well-lived life now! And I guarantee that you will! It is always done unto you as you believe.

This book is incredibly inspirational and so well worth it. The book, however, won't change your life. Only you can do that. And I happen to believe that you can!

Climate Change is NOT unstoppable.

This is one book everyone should read within the near future. why? because Bill Nye, like all great science enthusiasts, knows how to make complicated fields of science accessible to all layman readers. Bill Nye makes the case why Climate Change, one of the single most important problems facing the world today, needs to be addressed. He thoroughly goes case by case about the many nuances that climate science has to offer when being studied. His accessible and witty prose, mixed with his ability to remain on point is absolutely riveting. But probably the best part about this book is that it is so convincing and applicable, that anyone who reads this will thoroughly understand why climate change is not a hoax. Climate Change is the top priority on our to do list right now. Because, one musk themselves: should we sit here and do nothing and remain comfortable, or should we risk losing a little bit of it in order to save not only the planet, but for our future children?

It focuses on the many environmental challenges we face as a planet and provides hope through science and engineering on what we can do to rise to address them. Mechanical engineer, science educator, and Emmy award-winning TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy provides readers with yet another gem. This enjoyable 350-page book includes thirty-five chapters that cover a wide-range of topics pertaining to environmental issues.

Positives:
1. Entertaining, practical, well-written and well-researched book for the masses.
2. A great topic, how to harness science to change the world for the better. “To the Next Great Generation. Embrace science. Solve problems. Make things. Change the world.”
3. A pleasant, upbeat, engaging and sometimes even humorous tone throughout. Some of the topics are indeed alarming but Nye’s upbeat tone and practical knowhow emits confidence.
4. There is a love of science and engineering that is palpable throughout the book. Bill Nye loves the knowledge that science provides and the problem-solving attitude of engineering. “Engineers use science every day to build things and to solve problems, sometimes seemingly intractable problems.”
5. Many great topics discussed but this book revolves around climate change and its impact. “In recent years, you’ve probably heard a great many people speak about addressing climate change with lists of things we shouldn’t be doing—like burning fossil fuels, coal especially. In summary, this is a wonderful book on how to improve the planet. Bill Nye does a wonderful job of sharing his love for science and the power of engineering to solve big problems, including climate change. It’s a plea for action with a hopeful can do tone. I highly recommend it!

A Look At Climate Change Without Preaching

What an amazing book. If you're new to the Nye, this is a great representation of how fantastic he is at communicating scientific ideas, issues and solutions. Climate change is a serious challenge not only for humanity but for the earth as a whole. We're homeowners of a beautiful planet and he describes detailed solutions to some of our challenging problems regarding energy consumption and production.

I love that this book is not just another negative look at what it means to live in a world where the climate is changing. There is no blame placed on anyone and it truly looks at it from a thoughtful and scientific view.

About the Author

Edward G. Pita is Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor in the Environmental Control Technology Department at New York City Technical College of the City University of New York. He received a B.S. degree from Purdue University, an M.S. degree from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, all in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and is a registered professional engineer.

In addition to his career as an educator, Dr. Pita was chief mechanical engineer for a large consulting engineering firm responsible for HVAC projects for the United Nations, the State City of the Vatican, the U.S. Capitol, and many other governmental and private clients.

He has also worked in applications and systems engineering for the Carrier Corporation and the Worthington Corporation.

This fourth edition of Air Conditioning Principles and Systems has been significantly revised. Reflecting recent developments and concerns in the industry, substantial material has been added on indoor air quality, air pollution from combustion, and the new environmental requirements on refrigerants. Consistent with the overall philosophy of this text, the practical approach to these important issues will enable the reader to effectively address them in the workplace.

Use of the Internet for air conditioning work is a major component of this fourth edition. Many Websites of equipment manufacturers are listed. Problems are assigned that make use of these Web sites for equipment performance, selection, and specifications, and to ask and receive answers to technical questions. Web sites of HVAC design software providers are also listed. These offer heating and cooling load calculations, duct and pipe sizing, psychrometrics, and energy analysis. Problems are also assigned in these areas. Use of design software often entails a fee and restrictions, of course. Energy codes and standards are described, and each topic is examined from an energy conservation viewpoint, an approach that is essential for all future work in the air conditioning field. A chapter is devoted to solar heating and cooling.

Following an overview of the scope of air conditioning, the text reviews physical principles. Heating and cooling load calculations are explained in a thorough yet understandable manner. The latest methods (now required by most states) are used. The newly revised design weather data is included. Load calculation forms are furnished to aid the student. The subject of psychrometrics is presented in considerable detail, recognizing that it is at the heart of understanding air conditioning processes.

Air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems are covered thoroughly. Equipment construction and selection are described. Included in the discussion are reheat, dual duct, multizone, hydronic, and variable air volume systems. The presentation of refrigeration includes an explanation of absorption systems, heat pumps, and the scroll compress.

Decent text, but needs a workbook companion.

The text is pretty good. Straight forward, not too theoretical. But as a text for class, it would be really good if the problems at the end of each chapter had solutions or final answers. That's pretty typical of text books, every other question has an answer, so you can get an idea if you're doing things correctly. Without answers, it's somewhat like the blind leading the blind.

I rented this text. The binding is shot. Pages are literally falling out. I don't know if that is from significant use from previous renters, or just poor quality by the publishers. Possibly both?
