Interesting Allegory About Individuality

On the surface, Eucalyptus seems to be a fairy tale about a confined "princess" who can only be freed by a "prince" that names all the trees on her property. If one stops at that level, they will probably dwell on the frequent descriptions of eucalyptus that tend to break the story's narrative flow and the characters that seem a little too sparsely defined. Yet, beyond that basic reading of the text, there is a surprising depth to this book. To put it simply, Eucalyptus is a very interesting and challenging allegory about appreciating individuality.

Bail establishes his allegory by showing how his main characters have been primarily defined through speculation and assumption. For example, he depicts how Holland is subjected to conjecture regarding both his relationships and his past. Additionally, Bail describes some assumptions that were present when Holland and his wife first met. Given the prominent role that supposition played in shaping his life, Holland decides that the only man who can have his daughter is one who proves he can see past stereotype in order to appreciate a person's individuality. Holland attempts to achieve this objective by having his naming contest act as a surrogate for determining if a person can recognize uniqueness. However, Ellen goes beyond her father's intentions when she falls in love with a man who recognizes the eucalyptus' individuality by relating a story that reflects each tree's character. This man doesn't even have a name, thereby reinforcing Ellen's ability to see beyond a person's "title" to that which truly defines them as an individual.

By having his heroine fall in love with a person who recognizes each tree's "story" and not just their name, Bail makes the point that individuality is not just a person's title. Instead, he shows that individuality is tied to the experiences and stories that make up a person's existence. The fact that Bail conveys this point with elegant language and interesting trivia just makes the book richer. These elements make Eucalyptus much deeper than a simple fairy tale. In the end, the book is a fascinating examination of what determines individuality and the true way to acknowledge it.

A story like no other; fascinating but characters are flat.

On many levels this story fascinated me. As a budding writer I was envious of the amazing story which unfolded as I read. As a gardener and naturalist I was fascinated by the details of Australia's trademark trees and the way they were woven into the story to explain life and people's relationships with one another. I admired the "simplicity" of the writing style and the brevity of words. However, one thing puzzled me. I couldn't really get into the heads of the characters and feel what they were feeling. I only experienced their feelings through a kind of misty gauze. Something - a vital link - was missing between reader and characters to complete our understanding, to make our experience of this wonderful story complete. To me, the characters did not fully come to life. However, I have no regrets having read the story. I'm glad I did and have recommended it to others. I am honoured to somehow share the same landscape which had inspired Murray Bail, because like the obsessed characters of this book I too love the many forms the eucalyptus takes across this huge island. And I love his writing style. In a funny way, the flatness of the characters did not spoil my reading of the story, but gave me something to ponder when my reading was complete. What really were their feelings like? How would I have felt if I had been one of them? I can only imagine....and the story will continue to haunt me for years to come. Thanks Murray!

Beautiful story

I first read this book several years ago after my husband gave it to me. At first, I wasn't sure I liked it, but I continued to read it and ended up loving it. Yes, the story uses eucalyptus trees as a tool to wrap the story around, and no, I'm not really interested in trees, but that's not the point. Mr Bail tells a beautiful tale of a father and daughter and their relationship. Of course, this story isn't 'believable' because few of us, if any, have heard lately of a real father requiring a man to name all the trees on his property before being allowed to marry his daughter. How silly! And yet what a wonderful outline for a fairy tale. Fairy tales usually are 'unbelievable'. Who really has 'ugly step-sisters' or ever saw a frog turn into a prince after kissing the princess, or knew a girl who fell in love with a hideous beast? This is a story! The father is oblivious to his daughter's desires and doesn't even know who she is at all. Yet she is precious to him and he requires what may be an impossible task of the man who will 'take' her from him. I think that's a noble, if outdated, emotion in a father. She meets the man of her dreams, almost dies because she will be forced to marry a man she could never love, and is brought back to life by her lover. She falls under his spell because of the odd, enchanting stories he tells her. Of course the stories have no endings, but they are tales that spark her interest and imagination. I found those little pieces of stories fascinating. All women should be so fortunate that they can be made so happy with simple tales told by the man they love. So, I recommended this book to my latest book group, not sure if I or they would find it as wonderful as I remembered it. I did, but we have not yet gotten together to discuss this book. I expect some people will hate it and others, I hope, will see the beauty I found in it.

Smart, Funny, Informative -- Great Gift for Moms AND Dads

I have to say, BEFORE I had my kids, I read. A lot. I read dozens of pregnancy books and and all of those "The First Year" and "What to Expect" books. Why, I remember -- hazily -- that back then I'd even sometimes sit down to read The New York Times. Or, an actual book with page numbers and no illustrations or peanut-butter stains.

My, how things change once you have kids! I can't remember the last time I had the time to read anything except an illustrated children's book. But I was looking for a gift for friends who are having their second child and I found this book. Ordered it, and of course I had to read it before I wrapped it! When my husband caught me reading it for the third night in a row, he suggested maybe I should KEEP the one I'd been reading every night and buy our friends a new one. So, yes, I liked it so much I bought it twice! (Three times now, actually... this book makes a great gift.)

I realized that before you have kids, you are obsessed with the changes your body is going through, and making sure your baby is healthy, and then making sure you keep that little ball of love and poop ALIVE for the first few months. (Then, if you go on to have more kids, you are basically in survival mode and you're just hoping for a cup of coffee every morning and a shower maybe twice a week.) But after buying "Think Like a Baby," I realized that I'd never read a book that really explained how kids THINK. (And, I can't be the only one whose kids seem to act like the kid from "Parenthood" who runs around with a bucket on his head and bangs into walls...over and over again? Right? I mean...I'm hoping I'm not alone here. At least the screenwriter somewhere had a bucket-headed kid, too.) Anyway...

This book is awesome because it explains HOW and WHAT your kids are thinking, at different stages of development. It's really funny but also really informative. AND as a bonus to busy parents, it's set up in easy-to-read, short chapters. (I can't tell you how many parenting books I've bought recently that were so long-winded and technical that I just had to abandon them to the dust bunnies under my nightstand.) It's set up in three sections: "The First Year," "The Second Year," and "The Third Year and Beyond." In each section are a series of "experiments" you can do with your baby/kid. The experiments are easy to set up with household objects, and the ones I've done with my kids just feel like games. But then the authors explain how to interpret the results so you can understand your children's development.

If all of that sounds difficult -- don't worry! Even a woman with over four years' of severe sleep deprivation has succeeded in reading it AND using the experiments. :) I especially liked the ones relating to speech, because one of our kids has speech issues and the book's experiments really helped me see where my kid was at, as well as what might be "normal." And, the kids have fun with these "experiments" -- it's an easy way to entertain them!

I also like that this book is written by a married couple, just because you get both the male and female takes on things -- and it makes it a cool gift for both moms AND dads. Some books seem to be written solely for women -- which is awesome, go mom-power. But this is nice for the Dads to read, too. (I'm also in awe that a couple could write a book together, because my wonderful husband and I can barely choose an On-Demand movie some nights!)

Anyway: funny, smart, easy to read and a great gift!

Absolute Must Read!

This is by far one of the best books I have picked up. I am not a parent yet, but I enjoy studying the development of children. Not only are these experiments research based, but they are easy to do! It's extremely informative with a comedic twist at times.I find myself laughing out loud at comments made. Excellent information as always

I just finished reading Small Circulation by Jwing-Ming Yang and I've been implementing the energy practices in it. It hasn't involved changing much that I hadn't already learned from Mantak Chia's work on the Microcosmic orbit. If anything, it's provided more of a concrete explanation of the energetic mechanics involved with internal energy work.

What I find useful about his writing is just how much work he's done to translate documents and explain the processes described in those documents. The illustrations and instructions are straightforward and very helpful in learning how to work with the qi/chi of the body. Overall, I recommend reading this book as it will provide a thorough grounding in energy work techniques.

As I said, "This book answers lots of questions I had when reading Da Mo's Muscle/Tendon changing". Rephrasing ideas and modifying their presentation help in the clarification of the involved concepts. But like interesting books in general, this one requires two or three readings to settle the mind of the reader. So good luck, but I like it. However, I have to warn the reader: if you want a satisfying understanding of what it is written, you must experience what the author asserts and participate in his research; it's, I think, a necessary path to go into the book and enjoy it.

Really Good Book

If you're experienced with Adsense and blogging this may not appeal to you but I'm not experienced and I really liked the book. I read it in a few hours. Was so helpful and funny I kept trying to put it down and go to sleep because it's late. Had techniques and info I didn't know about SEO and some really great resources too. I actually took notes. I like his writing style. Reads more like a conversation.

Well it's 1:03 am. Gotta get some sleep now.

The fat kid in old clothes is always going to be bullied. Jess doesn’t know how to stand up for herself, and Kez takes advantage of that fact every time. Kez has her own problems, but she refuses to admit anything, or back down.

The world-building in this novel was vivid. I realised that it was based on a real place, but I’d never been to the place in person. But the end of the novel though, I had a really good grasp in my head where everything was, and I could ‘see’ the action happening. The characterisation was ok, but that was sort of secondary to Ainsworth’s bullying agenda.

I have to say that Ainsworth really got her teeth into the subject matter and tried to provide some really decent insight into how a victim and the bully feel. I can’t see this a school reading material – but maybe it should be. With concerns about bullying going rampant across Australia and other places, another expose can’t hurt – particularly if it’s one that teenagers can actually relate to.

Look, the hype about this book simply didn’t live up to my expectations. There are many rave reviews on GoodReads, but honestly I wasn’t left with too much of an ’emotion-hangover’ at the end of reading this, despite feeling somewhat invested in the characters throughout the novel.

I didn’t even really feel tension at the end of the novel. I felt that they were both shallow and weak, and I couldn’t care whether they died or not. I had some sympathy for Jess, but I couldn’t believe that Kez could get away with so many things, even in her household.

If it was read squarely by its target teen audience, I think you’d be looking at 4 stars. But for me, I simply didn’t feel enough compulsion when reading about the characters to give it that. 3 stars from me. Don’t let it be said that I don’t enjoy other teenage novels – I am capable of giving them 5 stars, but it has to be a particularly great novel for me to do so.

Stunning debut

I had the privilege of being a beta reader for Seven Days last year and I'm so glad it has now been published. Seven Days is intense and addictive reading. Eve tackles the disturbing issue of bullying with sensitivity, but never lets up on the cracking pace. The tension builds and builds leading to an exciting and gripping conclusion, with plenty of emotional twists and turns along the way. Both carefully-constructed main characters, Jess and Kez, victim and bully, have their problems and I found my sympathies veering from one to the other throughout the book. Very cleverly done.

At times the story made for uncomfortable reading but rightly so - Seven Days brilliantly demonstrates how complex bullying issues can be. It is thought-provoking, grim and tense in equal measure.

I can't wait to read more of Eve's books in the future.
