Excellent coverage of ML, Java, Prolog, and PL theory

This is one of the most clear and enjoyable Computer Science books I have ever read -- and being a CS Ph.D. student I've read quite a lot! The examples are at the right level of complexity, and the exercises at the end of each chapter are actually (gasp) fun! Alternating theoretical and practical chapters makes for a very balanced reading, where abstract concepts are explained by linking them to real language features.

The book smoothly moves the reader through Standard ML, Java and Prolog in a concise and pleasant manner. Although it doesn't go deep in any of these languages, it provides the reader with enough background to create simple programs and utilize the power of each language; the interested reader can go on to learn advanced language features with the confidence that all the basics have been covered. The book draws clear distinctions between all three languages, each of which represents a different way of thinking about programming. If you are looking for an excellent book on programming languages, or you just want to get a feel about different programming paradigms, this is your book!

A gentle Programming Languages text w/ functional languages

I just finished using this book teaching our Programming Languages course. We easily covered the entire book in a 15 week semester while adding additional material on Formal Semantics and Concurrent Programming. I really loved the book; the writing was engaging (I'm not kidding, this is the best textbook I've ever seen) and the supporting materials were extremely helpful. The greater-than-usual attention to functional programming languages (Webber covers ML, Java and Prolog) was initially the most important feature for me.
The only possible complaint about the text is that it doesn't go into more detail on a number of topics. The next time I teach the class, I would be happy to use it again while providing supplemental material, although I am considering Friedman et al's Essentials of Programming Languages.

This is a great textbook for people wanting to learn the basics of programming computers.It logically presents ML,Java and Prolog.The first sentence states,"Computer programmes are practical magic.".It absolutely is ! You will enjoy reading the historical background on programming too.The ideas really are not difficult to fathom .If you have a desire to learn the foundations of computer language design.For an advanced computer student,this book will be repetitive and frivolous.Yet,i found this basic programming book to be enjoyable and insightful.

The best book among many others I have

This review is for version 9.
Let me mention first: This book barely scratch the surface of the topic it discusses, but it's enough for the VERY beginner.

If you are a student studying this subject for the 1st time, or your class title is "Fundamental of Computer Engineering" or teach about logic design, Boolean algebra or such, you might want to read below:

This book is the ultimate book I've read (for beginner at least).
Let me tell you what book I have and how they compare in my opinion:

- Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals (Morris Mano) (No example or illustration or ....)
- Fundamentals of Logic Design (Charles Roth, Larry Kinney) (Very good. but I did not like how the book is structured)
- Digital Logic Design (brian Holdsworth) (I did not like it)
- Digital Design and Computer Architecture (David Harris) (extremely bad. That's actually a joke a more than a book)
- Digital Fundamental (Floyd) (Excellent "for beginner")

But why I did not like "Digital Design and Computer Architecture" even though it has good review on Amazon. For that, I invite you (just as example) to read the topic on KARNAUGH map in both books and compare... ...

Floyd book is well presented, structured and organized in a way you feel that the author is feeding you the material with a spoon, and he made his best to really teach you the book content. You always see "Pay attention to this, ...., notice this ...,don't get confused, ... ..." accompanied with plenty of illustrations, pictures, charts, lists, examples or whatever it takes, to make it easy for student to get visual on the subject. I guess he worked this book out deep from his heart and not just for profit.

When I was taking this class, I was forced by school to have "Logic and Computer Design Fundamentals (Morris Mano)". This book is great and awful at the same time. It talk about more in depth topics you don't find in Floyd book, but has no example whatsoever, no emphasize on important term and the book layout is extremely bad, that I got frustrated and started looking for an alternative. Once I got this book, I did not even need to follow my instructor notes anymore, since everything is in this book, and much more.
And for people who complain "... .. Only the fundamental is covered in this book ... ..", then, if you take a look at the book title, it's clearly titled "Digital Fundamentals". If you already studied the material and you feel comfortable in it, then there is definitely more advanced books in the market, that don't bother to teach you the "FUNDAMENTALS".

I should mention that "Fundamentals of Logic Design (Charles Roth, Larry Kinney)" is an excellent book too with more in depth examples than Floyd book. The examples in Floyd book are very easy, but the way he explain things, makes student ready to tackle complex problems. I started with Floyd book, and then I was able to grasp most of Charles Roth book content.
Anyway, the subject by itself is extremely easy to grasp once you understand the basic.

I got so impressed with the way the author presented this book, that I started looking for whatever available books he wrote for my other classes.

Digital Fundamentals (10th Edition)

The product was in better condition than advertised----especially compared with other used texts I have ordered online. It was in superior condition, with no marks or flaws whatsoever and it arrived before the expected date.
The text is also an excellent introduction for anyone interested in college level digital theory and applications.

I started writing for the chance at paying the rent with it about fifteen years ago (oh god, that's a long time, I was such a derp), and during that long, slow crawl uphill to professional status I learned a ton of tricks and tests to help me improve my craft, including ways to find my own unique voice, and methods to break through writer's block.

A few years ago I began sharing these writing challenges on Twitter (@HIGHzurrer) and gained a healthy number of followers who were just here for the "writing insight porn" if you know what I mean. This book contains my favorite challenges from that collection, plus a few dozen new ones I've learned since then.

To be honest, the book is going to be as much a reference document for myself as I hope it will be for you, so here it is. We're in this together.

Unlike the many "secret formula" screenwriting manuals for sale, Eric presents writing exercises to improve your writing and fire your imagination. There are no charts here, no after-the-fact film analyses, but rather simple, fun exercises that can help you become a better writer and an implicit understanding that becoming a better writer is the only thing that matters. Heisserer should know, he's lived the career of a screenwriter (unlike most).

Solid sensible approach to real screenwriting craft.

The "secret" to being a better screenwriter is to become a better writer. But it's tricky to spin that into a bestselling book. So we have shelves and shelves of books postulating various theories about screenplays and films and writing and the creative process and personal anecdotes. The condensation is generally a very basic foundation. Valuable but not terribly practical.

Eric presents a practical set of exercises that can help improve one's craft and work one's creative muscles. The stuff of becoming a better writer.

A Very Unique Book!

As an entrepreneur and work at home mom, I found this book to be a fascinating experience. What a unique way to encapsulate the success of a determined businessperson. The fictional perspective made things real, tangible, yet still filled with depth of knowledge and understanding of how a triumphant business works. And how to get there and stay there. I really enjoyed this book. Definitely not your typical business how-to, but it comes from someone who obviously knows his stuff and it's just as helpful, if not more, than some of the most prestigious business books out there. Give it a shot! You won't regret it!

I really appreciated the writing style of the author because it allowed me to identify with characters in the novel which kept me engaged to the storyline. Also, the pace of this business novel moves along so smoothly that I found it very easy to read quickly. There is so much information in this book that I’m currently reading it a second time. As a business owner I discovered so much wisdom between the pages of this book that during my first reading I kept taking notes as I progressed through the chapters. “The System - How to Have the Business You Deserve” is extremely hard time to put it down after you begin to read it which is the sure sign of a well written book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of starting a business and especially for those individuals who are currently running an established business. In "The System: How To Have The Business You Deserve: Live your life and run your business your way" author Michael Worthington has provided us with both an intriguing story and business guide wrapped into one.
It is, for me, the perfect way of gaining insight into the business world, while making it easy to read in the form of fiction.
Through the experiences of two top business counselors, the book provides us with a great amount of information that is enriching to anyone wanting to start their own business or wanting to grow their current business. The way the strategies and business tips are presented make it an easy read which I really enjoyed as I turned the pages.
Working independently, I had read several books about entrepreneurship but most, if not all of them, turn into lists of items to apply or keep in mind, making it just a book to keep on the shelf and read some of the pages. This, however, is not the case. This book has heroes and anti-heroes and characters that are well thought out, which all helps in a great way to get the information across to us in an effortless way.
I thoroughly enjoyed the read and will certainly apply the tips I learned.

A book for all ages

I was introduced to this book in a class provided by the company I work for. The class was entitled "Thinking Outside the Box". This class has been attended by executives and managers at large corporations the world over. I'm sure no one in the class expected the last activity to be reading "Hope for the Flowers" aloud. Although this is a "children's" book, it can be appreciated at many levels. I'm sure children will find it very entertaining and moving. However, the specific message relevant to adults is that "following the crowd" in the corporate world can be an empty pursuit, and that we all need to recognize the possibility of reaching for higher goals. The story is engaging, with two charming caterpillars as the main characters, and the beautiful illustrations of them and their exploits are very imaginative. We should all aspire to be butterflies!
