Rieko Kage is Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Tokyo, Japan. She earned her Ph.D. from Harvard University in 2005. A Beautiful MATH Book

Before I write this review, it's only fair to disclose that before even hearing of it I already had a very solid background in (graduate-level) analysis, which as another reader astutely pointed out is often considered "calculus" in the math community (I think the classic Calculus by Shlomo Steinberg, which can be found free online, has been used at Harvard for decades, while Tom Apostol's "Calculus," a misnomer to say the least, is the standard text at Stanford and Cal Tech - both are really books on advanced calculus and elementary real analysis). Part of the reason I am writing this is to clarify the distinction - many people aspiring towards quantitative roles on Wall Street don't know exactly what the mathematical prerequisites are for a particular subject or presentation, and hopefully I can help clarify this for other readers who, like myself, sought books like this one to learn the basics of mathematical finance.

On that note, Steele's book is a MATH book. By contrast, the wonderful book by Baxter & Rennie emphasizes core ideas with emphasis on the relationship between the three primary tools of the discipline (Martingale Representation, Ito-Doeblin Calculus, and the Feynman-Kac formula) while Shreve's classic emphasizes actual development of key models and techniques. Even Oksendal, which is aimed at a slightly more sophisticated mathematical audience, emphasizes applications at the expense of elegance.

In contrast, Steele's book is a math book aimed at Wharton (read: finance and economics doctoral students, likely in their second year) students with varied interests. Students taking this course probably have already taken a rigorous course in asset pricing theory from the academic viewpoint and need to fill in the blanks with the continuous-time techniques to extend these techniques and to understand stochastic calculus at the level necessary for research in economics/finance.

With that in mind, the book is versatile enough to be appreciated by different audiences. Steele certainly takes care give a clear, well-motivated presentation which explains to the reader WHY he is giving a concept, proof, or problem, and breaks the book up into small, digestible chapters. The problems are neither overly difficult nor disconnected from the text, although doing them is not an essential part of understanding the overall view. Furthermore, Steele clearly takes delight in the beauty of stochastic calculus, as demonstrated by Chapter 5 - Richness of Paths, which discusses the "interesting" properties of Brownian motion. For anyone who sat through a difficult analysis class thinking the whole purpose of the course was to annoy and taunt the student with irrelevant counterexamples (remember constructing a continuous yet non-differentiable function using limits?), this chapter will be especially fun.

In the first part of the book, Steele covers the basics of the random walk and martingales, introducing important theorems such as the upcrossing (downcrossing) lemma, submartingales and the Doob Decomposition theorem, the basic martingale inequalities, stopping times, and conditional probability (for those who are familiar with Williams' Probability with Martingales, the treatment is similiar). He then covers Brownian motion from both the standard perspective (a Brownian motion is a process such that...) and more intuitively as a limit of random walks (i.e. the "wavelet" construction/proof), using this subject as an opportunity to extend the martingale concepts to continuous-time.

In what could roughly be called the "second" part of the book, Steele develops the Ito integral as a martingale and as a process. Steele provides a lot of detail to the subject, perhaps in mind with the view that readers using stochastic calculus with more general underlying processes will have to understand the difference between a martingale and "just" a local martingale. He then quickly but sufficiently covers the standard topics of Ito calculus - Ito's lemma, quadratic variation, and the basic SDE, although in the Picard-type existence/uniqueness proof of SDEs he shows why the careful description of the Ito integral is not simply technical.

The next part of the book covers the "standard" topics in financial mathematics that would appeal to quant finance students . The chapter on arbitrage covers the basic Black-Scholes-Merton equation and its generalization to arbitrage pricing, although Steele (appropriately) addresses Black and Scholes CAPM derivation of their options pricing formula, which gives the finance/economics reader a historical perspective. The chapter on diffusions is excellent and gives all of the necessary elements for handling "nice" parabolic second-order equations. He even sneaks in Green's functions, series expansions, and the Maximum Principle without making uninterested readers have to learn them to follow the presentation.

In the last few chapters, he covers Martingale Representation, Girsanov's Theorem and their applications to more advanced topics in pricing, such as forward measures. The problems in this part of the book are nice because they help the reader understand the intuition behind a particular mathematical principle but not necessarily its application to a well-recognized model. The final chapter on the Feynman-Kac formula gives a very intuitive proof of its topic which helps the reader understand what is meant by "killing" a process and hopefully how that translates into finance; other books often just do a coefficient-matching proof, which really doesn't capture what's really going on.

I emphasize again that while the book is designed to serve a different purpose than texts such as Shreve or Baxter & Rennie, it can help readers of different backgrounds understand the basic elements needed for more advanced stochastic analysis and gain an appreciation for both the beauty of the subject and the underlying intuition liking the math to the finance. The prerequisite, though, is at least a (rigorous undergrad) course in real analysis, probably some familiarity with measure theory, probability, and L(p) spaces (or at least L(1,2,inf) spaces), and at least basic familiarity with the elements of stochastic calculus (Ito's lemma and computations with "box calculus", for example). For readers seeking a more comprehensive treatment of quantitative finance, this book is reasonably good mathematical preparation to understand Musiela/Rutkowski, and for doctoral students, understanding most of the topics in this book with a brief introduction to dynamic programming in the continuous-time setting is sufficient background to read Merton's book (consumption-investment problems) as well as understand the basics of derivative pricing.

nice treatment of a difficult subject in probability

I knew Mike Steele from my days as a graduate student at Stanford. He is also a Stanford graduate and a first rate probabilist. When I knew him he was doing some post-doctoral teaching at Stanford. He is a great teacher and writer.

Mike Steele has used the material in this text to teach stochastic calculus to business students. The text presupposes knowledge of calculus and advanced probability. However the students are not expected to have had even a first course in stochastic processes. The book introduces the Ito calculus by first teaching about random walks and other discrete time processes. Steele uses a lecturing style and even brings in some humor and philosophy. He also presents results using more than one approach or proof. This can help the student get a deeper appreciation for the probabilitist concepts.
The gambler's ruin problem is one of the first problems that Steele tackles and he uses recursive equations as his way to introduce it.

Brownian Motion, Skorohod embedding and other advanced mathematics is introduced and emphasized. After motivating the stochastic calculus and developing martingales Steele covers arbitrage and stochastic differential equations leading up to the fundamental Black-Scholes theory that is important in financial applications. It is not fair to criticize this book for lack of applicability. It is strickly intended to develop a firm theoretical background for the students that will prepare them for a deep understanding of financial models important in applications.

I am not enough of an expert in this area to know if Professor McCauley's criticism in another amazon review of this book is valid, but I do think he is a little too harsh in criticizing the ideology that Steele presents. The ideology is what makes Steele's lectures stimulating and interesting to the students.

Very good intro to stochastic calculus and applications

I took the author's course (at Wharton) on the subject when his book was in its early stages. I went very carefully through the notes (chapters of the book), and I learned a great deal (which is why I have purchased the final product). Given that I had previously used Musiela and Rutkowski ("Martingale Methods in Financial Modelling") in a Columbia graduate course, this was a considerable feat.
Steele, a Wharton Statistics professor, uses financial applications to motivate stochastic calculus from a particular perspective. I have no doubt that he sees stochastic calculus as a field that exists outside of finance and that he does not intend to teach the reader finance theory. His goal, I believe, is to offer a text that is more readable than the classic text of Karatzas and Shreve ("Brownian Motion and Stochastic Calculus"). In my opinion, he has accomplished this goal.
Protter ("Stochastic Integration and Differential Equations: a new approach") does an excellent job, as he is clear and develops the theory in greater generality (using semi-martingales). However, his text is highly theoretical and offers no finance applications. Duffie ("Dynamic Asset Pricing Theory") and Musiela and Rutkowski (above) do not offer the reader the necessary stochastic calculus background.
Lastly, this is a non-trivial subject. For people who do not sit down by themselves and put in the required hours, the outcome will be disappointing.

About the Author

Flagg Miller is Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Davis. Trained as a linguistic anthropologist, his first book, The Moral Resonance of Arab Media: Audio-cassette Poetry and Culture in Yemen, examined how Yemenis have used traditional poetry and new media technologies to envision a productive relationship between tribalism and progressive Muslim reform.

What Did Osama bin Laden Say?

The early years of Osama bin Laden as a jihadist and his activities in Afghanistan were not well known to many in the U.S. except for a few CIA and FBI analysts who began tracking a man who abandoned his family fortune to fight the growing U.S. influence in the Islamic Holy Lands.
Strategically, the United States set out on a war against an ideology that most U.S. policymakers did not understand and often they did not listen to the few that had some idea of the emerging threat of al-Qaida.

Dr. Flagg Miller is a linguistic anthropologist who has spent nearly a decade cataloging, translating, and interpreting a treasure trove of over 1,500 audio recordings of bin Laden and other jihadist leaders recorded between 1997 and 2001. The tapes served as an audio library for visitors to bin Laden’s Khaddar home and show the wear and tear of being listened to by his visitors.

Gratitude for a crucial perspective

Staying true to the content of the tapes, Dr. Miller gives us the gift of allowing us to enter the mind of one of the most villianized people on the planet and his cohort. Like a fibonacci spiral, careful contextualization of key audio recordings unfolds a much-needed dimensionality to a chapter of human history that had been so marred by hate and misunderstanding as to be virtually incomprehensible. This foundational work helped me, as a lay person to gain understanding and abate my frustration with the conundrum presented to us by mainstream media about binLaden, Al-Qaeda, Jihadism, and Muslim Extremism by situating their complexity in their proper context, politically, linguistically, and historically. Dr. Miller, without taking a heavy-handed or moralistic stance on the perspective the audio tapes present, lets us grapple with the many ways humans can build stories of an evil other. This objectivity is a powerful and rare quality to find in any book, especially on such a controversial topic. I am grateful to Dr. Miller for providing a cooling gust of wind on a topic often stifled by unproductive foregone conclusions. A testament to its impact: I plan to re-read this book and have saved the link to the audio on my browser.

The best book on al-Qaeda, global jihad and Osama bin Laden.

With his access to ~1200 audio tapes belonging to bin Laden, most emerging from the mujahideen milieu in the years during and after the Soviet Afghan Invasion, Miller is able to do something that no other historian has done, which is construct a plausible narrative of what was happening in the decade leading up to 9/11 that relies not on grotesque assumptions but primary documents. It becomes apparent that much, if not all, of the narrative we've inherited about al-Qaeda is one constructed by professional foreign policy analysts and members of the US Government through guesswork and poor translation, and one later adopted by bin Laden as a marketing tool.

The tapes offer a different story, and Miller's cogent analysis leaves the reader wondering about the inherited legacy of cultural miscommunication and willful ignorance undergirding the last sixteen years of global life.

Truly the most shocking book that I've read in many years!

About the Author

Ruminations is an oustanding book. Where there is no vision...."the people will perish." Kris gives us his vision, inspires us to awaken our own vision, and encourages us to continually increase our awareness and personal power. It's amazing that so few people realize that thought, word, and action are the fundamental tools we use to create our own unique destiny. He has been telling us this for years, as have many other great Teachers! When ya'll gonna listen!! Simple universal truths consistently applied is all we need to advance as people regardless of our differences. Most people are not able to apply this vision in their daily lives because of laziness, fear, and social conditioning. Heroes have discipline. The clarity in this book is phenomenal. For those of you who are searching for a way to liberate your soul...to express your Self and be your Self..this book will help you in your journey. Many people in our society are living day to day in a life of reaction, a life they hate, a life they never planned for, yet fell victim to someone elses plan. Because of ignorance, most people are mental slaves trapped in an endless cycle of poverty, misery and negativity/niggativity. We in Hiphop reevaluate this whole United States of America, because we don't like what we see. We have higher expectations. We expect more of ourselves than any institution in this country could ever expect of us. This is why we're dissatisfied with the performance of many individuals who call themselves "leaders." It takes more than graduate school degrees and high ranking government positions to impress the Hiphop community, let alone lead us, it takes: skills, conviction, and intellect to be held in high esteem by us. The spoken word pieces, message from Cornell West, and Hiphop lectures on the CD are an excellent addition to the book. Of course, Kris eloquently illuminates our artform of Hiphop, our strategy to break the chains of mental slavery, free our minds, and evolve into civilized human beings because after all: We decide what Hiphop is and what it isn't, not anyone else.

The best book I've ever read

I just finished what may be one of the most important and
impressive books I've ever read, "Ruminations" by KRS ONE.
When it finally arrived in the mail I was very excited to read
it, I'm one of KRS' biggest fans and think it is criminal just
how unappreciated he can be. I believe that he is not only
one of the great minds in hip hop but one of the most brilliant
minds period. As Digital Underground says he deserves some
heartbeat props as I'm sure hundreds of years from now his
groundbreaking and progressive philosophies will be truly
admired.
Although I've only read the book through once so far and
realize I will need a few more reads to harvest all the jewels I
can say already that this is a book that should be read by all.
I wasn't quite expecting what I got, even Tavis Smiley who
does the introduction was saying how he was blown away
by what KRS offers. The book is not anecdotal at all, it is
pretty much packed with idea after idea and is very scholarly
and serious. Don't expect an autobiography or a conversational
as-told-to book, there are funny and light moments but KRS
is really looking to inspire and provoke here rather than to
entertain.
The first part of the book and my favourite is titled Urban
Inspirational Metaphysics and includes some hardcore
philosophy teachings. He's really outlining how he thinks
we can be better people and what we need to learn and
unlearn in order to get there. There is then a big section
on the reparations issue, then one chapter each on history,
language, voting, September 11th, and then two on hip
hop. You could actually be forgiven for forgetting that KRS
is an emcee for the first three quarters of the book. The
title Ruminations is really appropriate because it is truly
KRS the philospher/theologian/motivational speaker/activist/
deep thinker speaking his mind on various issues, not just
the rapper.
The book isn't perfect. I would have welcomed a bit more
humour at times, the last chapter is actually almost his whole
first book "The Science of Rap" from 1995 reprinted. That isn't
really a problem though since it wasn't a widely distributed
book so I'm sure it will be seen for the first time by most.
Also, when discussing the self KRS is a stauch believer in mind
over matter. I think with all the recent scientific evidence
coming out about the overwhelming role genes and physiology play
in a lot of human behaviour that it would have been nice if he
dealt with that to a degree.
Bottome line, what this book will make you do is think, KRS
likes to think outside the box, make you see things in a new way.
He's a visionary and an idealist who sees the vastness of human
and societal potential and is not satisfied until that potential
is reached. As KRS said on Sex and Violence "If there's one
thing I know, if there's one thing I know, it's that the truth
can always be questioned" The perspectives offered by
Ruminations are guaranteed to shake up some of your old truths.
There's also a CD that comes with the book which includes an
intro from Dr. Cornel West and pieces of KRS lectures and some
spoken word poetry. Beautiful stuff, the more people who I
imagine being exposed to this book the more optimistic I feel
about my own future, my future as a citizen and ultimately
the future of humanity, it really is that good.

Asimov's great robot murder-mysteries

Isaac Asimov is one of the greatest Science Fiction writer of all time as he brings science to the genre while writing in a very clever and accessable way. Not many SF authors were scientists before they became writers and Asimov clearly knows his science and, more importantly, the level of science the audience knows.

This "Robot Trilogy" is set two thousand years into the future; well after his "I, Robot" short stories which precede it and set up the now-universal Laws of Robotics, and before Asimov's 'Empire' novels. 'The Caves of Steel' (an acronym for the cities of the future) is set on Earth, while 'The Naked Sun' and 'The Robots of Dawn' are set on colonised planets elsewhere in the galaxy. Each story follows the investigations of detective Elijah Baley and his human-looking robot partner (mascarading as a 'Spacer'), Daneel Olivaw, as they solve murder mysteries on each planet.

These stories are well crafted and read like good old-fashioned murder mysteries. The unique aspects of these novels are their off-world settings and robot characters; the robots must obey the three laws of robotics, the first being that a robot cannot harm a human, or through inaction, allow a human to be harmed. But loopholes exist which Asimov explores brilliantly. But what drives these stories is the relationship between Earthmen and Spacers (outer world colonialists). Here, the two are distinctly polar in every way, thus fueling the stereotypical fears between the two groups. For example, Earthmen are considered by 'spacers' as second-class citizens due to their idiosynchratic indoor-only nature and susceptibility to disease, while spacers are considered elitist by Earthmen as they don't allow physical contact. A number of other psychological and social problems are also addressed by Asimov, in particular the "Frankenstein" complex that humans have developed in response to creating robots - other sentient beings. Other themes include community versus the individual, change versus stagnation, and dependance on technology to prolong life.

What is really impressive about Asimov is the fact that he has accomplished what he has without violence. I don't recall in any Asimov novel a gun being fired!

Why buy this book? Each novel can be read individually but are really designed to be read one story after another. So buy this omnibus instead of purchasing three separate books. You will want to read "The Naked Sun" and "The Robots of Dawn" after reading "The Caves of Steel" anyway. Also, read "I, Robot" before venturing into his other novels as Asimov sets up his rules here.

(Asimov began his robot novels with the collection of short stories entitled "I, Robot" which was set in the years 2010 to 2050 roughly and presented for the first time the Three Laws of Robotics. These stories revealed man's distrust of robots which were created to serve man and his occupations, especially in Earth orbit and in the Solar System (the extent of exploration at this point in human history), and importantly, not on Earth.)

Una agradable sorpresa. Muchas veces oimos sobre las personas en el medio con una imagen superficial y nunca los conoces verdaderamente. Es un libro facil de leer. Es bueno para las personas que no se dan cuenta de que tienen ciertos patrones de conducta que repiten todo el tiempo en sus relaciones con los demas. No todos aceptan que necesitan ayuda. Bravo! Saw it in a store and it was cheaper here! Bought it for someone else for a holiday gift. It has some amazing recipes!! Fell in love with it and ended up buying one for myself!! The recipes are delicious even if you do not paid it with beer! Great appetizers and hors d'oeuvres.
