About the Author
Steve Fenton has worked on large-scale JavaScript applications for over ten years, from online trading portals to cloud contact centers to health care decision support. He has been a vocal supporter of TypeScript since its release and wrote the first book on the TypeScript language in October 2012. As well as working full time in the health care industry, Steve has had an academic renaissance, first completing a national certificate in psychology and then enrolling in a distance learning course at Harvard. Steve currently lives in Basingstoke, United Kingdom with his wife Rebecca and daughter Lily. He can usually be found in his local coffee shop reading books on his two favorite topics: programming and psychology.

This is a GREAT book.

This is a GREAT book... I am a looong time JS and AS3 developer.. so it was easy for me to pickup... never the less, the Autother goes beyon typescript, he explains basic design patterns and lots of tips on how to properly use Typescript.
Now that Angular 2.0 was announced to be powered by Typescript (instead of ATScript), I think this book will get lots of traction.

It is a good solid book for a sound understanding of Typescript and along the way you will pick general JS tips such as variable hosting getting overridden from global etc..

this is one is a keeper...

I have read way more programming books than I can remember. This is one of the best!!
It may seem a little heady at first (ch2) , but it is on the money and very practical if you are going to
get to a professional level (no pun intended) with TypeScript. The writer is very clear, very articulate and
thorough (nothing left out) without making you feel like you are soaking up stuff you can't use.

Well Written

I'm not one that is easily impressed with most service manuals. Let's say they are not created equal. This manual, however, is extremely well written by a technical writer that knows what he/they are doing and how to convey the message. I only studied one section on the fuel system and EFI, but I am confidant the rest of the manual will pass muster as well.

Her memoir Caged in America was born and finally composed from her experiences while living in Dearborn, Michigan in a tightly knit Muslim community. Ms. Sharif has secured a safe place which finally allows her to flourish as a writer and poet. She is an avid speaker locally in defense of the strength of women's survival from domestic violence. She has remained on the top 100 sales list with Amazon and Barnes and Noble for 2009. Ms. Sharif strives to assist other women who have had similar experiences regardless of religion or color. Amazing

I have just finished the book for a second time. By the way both editions are the same book. I would like other readers and seekers of truth to feel the passion and pride of this woman on her journey as she takes the reader to Yemen and to " little Yemen " in Dearborn, Michigan. Ms Sharif unwinds a tale of horror from her four arranged marriages where she was first " purchased" as a virgin by her husband in her mid teens. Subsequently she was sold by her father 3 more times before she finally left with her 2 young sons and fled to a womans shelter in Ann Arbor,MI and beyond.

The author does not mince words as she unveils her passions about love ( the only love aside from her 3 children was her first husband)and her descriptions about the abuse from her father,brothers and 3 husbands. It is a book not for the weak hearted. It is a song of freedom and respect for our rights as American Women to establish a residence apart from sexual and psychological abuse.

She furthermore identifies the committment to her religion as a Muslim woman that was criticized by her father.... The Qu'ran was her comfort, her prayers the only things that got her through many nights and days locked in a house away from the world in our country the home of the "free".
Read this book with an open mind to dispel myths about women of Islam. Personally I am not Muslim and yet I feel the need to cry out for her right to embrace her own heartbeat in a land created for freedom of speech and religion.

To my knowlege Ms Sharif is now free from her oppressors and living her life finally. I bless her and hope the wounds of the past echo quietly and silently as she embraces her future without balto or veil unless she would choose to wear them.

True & Heartbreaking

I personally know Jasmine. I have seen many people speaking badly of her and saying that she wrote this book for fame and money, I can tell you that is a huge lie. She lives 4 apartments down from me and we visit almost everyday. She makes no money from her story at all. Not only did her family scar her and take advantage of her, but her book was basically stolen and someone else is making money off of it. She lives far from a queen and struggles to take care of her 2 boys. Her daughter is stuck in that lifestyle and she wants to save her. Jasmine is one of the kindest, most honest people I have ever met and she is family to me. Her story is absolutely true and she is trying very hard to be normal again. I hope whoever reads this, takes this story very seriously because all she wants from this, is to help other abused women to be free from that lifestyle.

This excellent compilation of essays by James Allen truly holds the key to success, amongst other things! I feel so inspired after reading this book, so ready to put into practice what this powerful, little book is teaching. This "classic" has been around since the turn of the century and it seems to be even more relevant in today's stressful and competitive society. I underlined so many wonderful and inspiring passages that I intend to refer to on a daily basis. As Allen states, "a man is literally what he thinks", or as the saying goes, garbage in, garbage out! Or put another way, "All that a man achieves and all that he fails to achieve is the direct result of his own thoughts."
I have learned that I cannot blame others for my life, or my state of affairs - they are my creation, the end product of my thoughts and actions. Allen states that man makes or unmakes himself by the thoughts he keeps and cultivates. Man is truly is his own worst enemy!
I really resonated to his quote on fear, "Thoughts of doubt and fear never accomplish anything, and never can. They always lead to failure. Purpose, energy, power to do, and all strong thoughts cease when doubt and fear creep in." How profound and how true. How we let fear run our lives - again proving how powerful our thoughts can be. Allen further expounds by saying, "He who has conquered doubt and fear has conquered failure."
The garden of our mind is only cultivated by us. What kind of crop we want to consistently yield is solely determined on our positive, enriching, and encouraging thoughts or on our doubting, destructive and negative ones. We alone hold the key to our future, and our success, and our attainments in life. We can either have a feast or a famine - it is only up to us.
This highly inspirational book cannot help but to motivate you in some degree. I feel like I have been given the keys to a door that was once rusty and would not open, but now will yield freely in my hand. Another great quote is, "The Vision that you glorify in your mind, the Ideal that you enthrone in your heart - this you will build your life by, this you will become." This is one book that you will want to keep constantly by your side, especially for those times when you get discouraged, or when the road seems rough. Don't buy this particular edition!

The one star has NOTHING to do with the content of this wonderful publication, it goes without saying that anyone who has stumbled upon the genius of Allen's masterpiece knows full well that the truth is what it is, i.e. this book is sublime mastery. No, my one star simply refers to this DeVorss imprint, this veritable 'mini-book'. Sadly nowhere on the page was it explained that this was a MINI version, a pamphlet indeed. My advice, pay the extra 2~300 yen and get yourself a 'proper' copy - one that will stand up in your bookshelf. Thank you.

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, "A man is what he thinks about all day long..." We are...we really, really are. But the sad fact of the matter is, most of us do not really know what we are thinking. In fact, I would say that most of us aren't really thinking at all. Most of us are just operating on unconscious reactions to things.

Does this make you a little nervous?

It should...but...don't get too nervous...don't go too much in a panic. If there is something from this review that I want you to remember the most, is this:

WHAT THOUGHT HAS DONE, THOUGHT CAN UNDO!!

Think about this for the next 25 years of your life. Meditate upon this powerful Truth. Who you are is simply the residual effect of what you have thought about in the past. This is is a new day! This is a new opportunity for you to turn EVERYTHING around! If you have been ill or sick, now is your time to claim health and wellness. If you have been experiencing lack or limitation, now is the accepted time to claim wealth and abundance. You see, the universe never holds anything back from you. Never! There is only a stream of well-being in the universe...you just need to come into alignment with it...and we do this with our thoughts...we do this with our feelings...we do this with the images we are holding in mind.

Think about only that which you desire to attract. Feel the feelings of how it would be to have those things you want to attract. Imagine having those things, those experiences, that beautiful, abundant, healthy, well-lived life now! And I guarantee that you will! It is always done unto you as you believe.

This book is incredibly inspirational and so well worth it. The book, however, won't change your life. Only you can do that. And I happen to believe that you can!

Climate Change is NOT unstoppable.

This is one book everyone should read within the near future. why? because Bill Nye, like all great science enthusiasts, knows how to make complicated fields of science accessible to all layman readers. Bill Nye makes the case why Climate Change, one of the single most important problems facing the world today, needs to be addressed. He thoroughly goes case by case about the many nuances that climate science has to offer when being studied. His accessible and witty prose, mixed with his ability to remain on point is absolutely riveting. But probably the best part about this book is that it is so convincing and applicable, that anyone who reads this will thoroughly understand why climate change is not a hoax. Climate Change is the top priority on our to do list right now. Because, one musk themselves: should we sit here and do nothing and remain comfortable, or should we risk losing a little bit of it in order to save not only the planet, but for our future children?

Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World by Bill Nye

“Unstoppable” is a wonderful, upbeat plea to make a better world through science. It focuses on the many environmental challenges we face as a planet and provides hope through science and engineering on what we can do to rise to address them. Mechanical engineer, science educator, and Emmy award-winning TV personality Bill Nye the Science Guy provides readers with yet another gem. This enjoyable 350-page book includes thirty-five chapters that cover a wide-range of topics pertaining to environmental issues.

Positives:
1. Entertaining, practical, well-written and well-researched book for the masses.
2. A great topic, how to harness science to change the world for the better. “To the Next Great Generation. Embrace science. Solve problems. Make things. Change the world.”
3. A pleasant, upbeat, engaging and sometimes even humorous tone throughout. Some of the topics are indeed alarming but Nye’s upbeat tone and practical knowhow emits confidence.
4. There is a love of science and engineering that is palpable throughout the book. Bill Nye loves the knowledge that science provides and the problem-solving attitude of engineering. “Engineers use science every day to build things and to solve problems, sometimes seemingly intractable problems.”
5. Many great topics discussed but this book revolves around climate change and its impact. “In recent years, you’ve probably heard a great many people speak about addressing climate change with lists of things we shouldn’t be doing—like burning fossil fuels, coal especially. That guidance is useful, but we need to focus more on the things we aggressively should be doing—like developing ways to store renewable energy.”
6. Hits back against science denialism. “The warming of our world has gone in lockstep with the increasing amounts of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases we have dumped into the atmosphere. The connection between climate change and human activity is akin to the connection between cancer and smoking.” “What on Earth makes anyone think that 97% of the world’s climate scientists are wrong?”
7. Does a great job of making difficult topics easy for the public to understand. “Most of the electrical power in the world—everything produced from coal, oil, natural gas, or nuclear material—relies on boiling water to spin a turbine that runs a generator.” “One of their insights is that there is no such thing as “cold,” at least in this scientific sense. There is instead only the absence of heat.”
8. One of the joys of reading this book is the discussion of big or innovative ideas to solve problems. “I’m talking about a substitute for asphalt. Instead of a jet-black parking lot, with an albedo less than 10 percent, I’m imagining a nearly white parking lot, with an albedo up around 70 percent.” “The idea, then, is to produce bubbles in water to make the water more reflective on purpose.”
9. A reasonable look at nuclear energy. “The primary appeal of nuclear energy is what it does not produce: carbon. Right now the two biggest zero-carbon energy sources in the United States are hydroelectric power and nuclear power.”
10. Plenty of interesting factoids throughout the book. “We get about 19 percent of our electricity from nuclear plants, 6 percent from dams, and about 5 percent from wind and solar.”
11. Solar energy. “The big idea of space-based power is to collect solar energy above the atmosphere—where sunshine is continuous, up where we can get at the full spectrum—and put it on Earth where we can make it almost directly into electricity. It’s a big engineering idea.”

14. A look at fuel flexibility. “Because of their agricultural situation, Brazilians are able to use their ethanol effectively. Most of their vehicles are fuel-flexible. They have sensors in the fuel system that sense how much alcohol is mixed with the gas, and they adjust the timing of the ignition spark to match the fuel on board.”

16. A look at improving getting freshwater to the world. “We just need the magical material that separates water from salt as readily as the mangroves and the seabirds do.”

How to improve feeding the world and GMOs. “If we add it all up, the economic sector that uses the most of Earth’s resources and produces the largest environmental change is our agriculture.” “A lot of the resistance I see to GMOs has less to do with the perceived safety of the food or the ecosystems than with a basic mistrust in large corporations—especially large industrial chemical corporations.”
18. A recurring humorous theme, environmental competition Bill Nye has with his neighbor actor friend Ed Begley. Nye demonstrates how his home is his personal lab for efficiency improvements. “Now I’m a big-time minor celebrity with no obligations and a deep desire to crush Begley, so I had two separate inline or tankless water heaters installed.”
19. The reality of it all. “The less we do to address climate change now, the more regulation we will have in the future.”
20. Loved the chapters on space exploration. “If your rocket were perfectly efficient, you would need about 500 million Joules to lift one ton of payload to a height of 100 kilometers (62 miles), which is a common definition of where “space” begins.”
21. A practical recommendation to improve the planet. “In general, no one has the guts or the political influence sufficient to establish a carbon fee or tax or shared financial burden regarding climate change.”

Negatives:
1. Lacking in visual content (graphs, timelines, and diagrams).
2. Some on the right may take issue with some of the political criticism. The truth is it is done so at a minimal.
3. No notes.
4. No formal bibliography.

In summary, this is a wonderful book on how to improve the planet. Bill Nye does a wonderful job of sharing his love for science and the power of engineering to solve big problems, including climate change. It’s a plea for action with a hopeful can do tone. I highly recommend it!

A Look At Climate Change Without Preaching

What an amazing book. If you're new to the Nye, this is a great representation of how fantastic he is at communicating scientific ideas, issues and solutions. Climate change is a serious challenge not only for humanity but for the earth as a whole. We're homeowners of a beautiful planet and he describes detailed solutions to some of our challenging problems regarding energy consumption and production.

I love that this book is not just another negative look at what it means to live in a world where the climate is changing. There is no blame placed on anyone and it truly looks at it from a thoughtful and scientific view.

About the Author

Edward G. Pita is Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Professor in the Environmental Control Technology Department at New York City Technical College of the City University of New York. He received a B.S. degree from Purdue University, an M.S. degree from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. degree from the University of Maryland, all in mechanical engineering. He is a member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) and is a registered professional engineer.

In addition to his career as an educator, Dr. Pita was chief mechanical engineer for a large consulting engineering firm responsible for HVAC projects for the United Nations, the State City of the Vatican, the U.S. Capitol, and many other governmental and private clients.

He has also worked in applications and systems engineering for the Carrier Corporation and the Worthington Corporation.

This fourth edition of Air Conditioning Principles and Systems has been significantly revised. Reflecting recent developments and concerns in the industry, substantial material has been added on indoor air quality, air pollution from combustion, and the new environmental requirements on refrigerants. Consistent with the overall philosophy of this text, the practical approach to these important issues will enable the reader to effectively address them in the workplace.

Use of the Internet for air conditioning work is a major component of this fourth edition. Many Websites of equipment manufacturers are listed. Problems are assigned that make use of these Web sites for equipment performance, selection, and specifications, and to ask and receive answers to technical questions. Web sites of HVAC design software providers are also listed. These offer heating and cooling load calculations, duct and pipe sizing, psychrometrics, and energy analysis. Problems are also assigned in these areas. Use of design software often entails a fee and restrictions, of course. Good overview

Packs a lot of info into a small package. Good starting point for learning more systems in depth. The HVAC ocean is deep and wide, but with this you have a map.

Decent text, but needs a workbook companion.

The text is pretty good. Straight forward, not too theoretical. But as a text for class, it would be really good if the problems at the end of each chapter had solutions or final answers. That's pretty typical of text books, every other question has an answer, so you can get an idea if you're doing things correctly. Without answers, it's somewhat like the blind leading the blind.

I rented this text. The binding is shot. Pages are literally falling out. I don't know if that is from significant use from previous renters, or just poor quality by the publishers. Possibly both?
