When Bill Hopkins returned home from the Pacific war, this 3rd Marine Division veteran knew very little about how the battles against Japan were won or lost—not surprising for a participant. As years passed, Hopkins learned quite a bit about how the battles in the Pacific were won and lost, especially from the American point of view, as massive histories of the war were published along with memoirs of a number of the most senior military commanders. However, in the grim calculus of war, why these battles were fought and how the decisions were made at the strategic and operational level in the Pacific remained much less clear.
The success of the Nazi war machine, the vaunted wehrmacht, made the fight against Germany first priority for the Allies. Indeed, the United States had been providing substantial material support to Great Britain’s war with Germany long before Pearl Harbor. The Soviet Union didn’t even declare war against the Japanese until August 8, 1945, two days after Hiroshima, one day before Nagasaki, and only a week before VJ Day, when Japan surrendered on August 15.
Still, the remarkable string of Japanese victories over the five months following Pearl Harbor—the Philippines with Bataan and Corregidor, Hong Kong, the “invincible” fortress of Singapore, Java Sea, and so on—compelled America to take action. The U.S. effort was on the rise in the Coral Sea in early May 1942, followed by the miracle at Midway in June and the invasion on a shoestring of Guadalcanal by the 1st Marine Division in August.
Victory at Midway and the ultimate success of the Guadalcanal campaign proved to be the turning points in the Pacific War, and finally the U.S. Navy, Army, and Marines were on a march across the Pacific that would end with Allied victory three years later. Most students of the war know that there were two paths across the Pacific: the Central Pacific campaign under Admiral Chester W. Nimitz that island-hopped from Guadalcanal to Okinawa while bringing the Japanese fleet to battle and defeating it, and General Douglas MacArthur’s campaign from New Guinea to the Philippines.
But why were there two separate American operations in the Pacific, how did the politics in Washington and elsewhere affect the conduct of the war, and who were the players and what parts did they play? I enjoyed this book

I enjoyed this book. I have some problems with it. The title and Amazon description claim a broader treatment of the war but the book, sometimes confusedly, intermixes small unit actions with large scale strategic and political discussions. I bought the book for the latter as I have a large library of the war at the tactical level. Once again, I have some problem with the notion that the Marine Corps won the pacific War alone with a bit of help from the Navy. No one can possibly detract from the Corp's performance but it was a contribution in hand with all of the other services.
The author does make an effort to correct the nearly universally held view of McArthurs' performance. That effort is a rare stab at the hagiography created by his worshippers (including most worshipfully, himself). An accurate and balanced biography of MacArthur is yet to be written. It will be a massive departure from the likes of William Manchester.
All in all worthy of four stars. Given the author's clear capabilities it could have been much better.

The book that ties it all together

Hopkins has assembled a commendable work that links the most important battles of the Pacific with the US strategy, the politics, and the personalities that shaped the Pacific theater. He provides the backgrounds for each major step and takes you through the events at a level sufficient to put it into the broader perspective.
You won't find content regarding technology or the tactics of specific battles. Hopkins puts a timeline to these seemingly disparate events of this theater to give the reader appreciation for the decisions of MacArthur, Nimitz, Halsey, Marshall, and Roosevelt. But he does it in a very readable way. The many maps help as well. I also enjoyed the brief descriptions of the smaller battles which haven't yet warranted their own books (which made me feel sorry for the many who perished fighting these battles without any real historical recognition).
Having read individual personal recounts of individual battles or campaigns in the Pacific, I was pleased that Hopkins has delivered a very readable history that brings it all together. I'm not a historian who remembers each fact, so I can't comment on Hopkin's accuracy. But its sufficient for a reader to "get" the US Pacific strategy and timeline, and to enjoy doing so.
I've avoided other books spanning the Pacific theater that are tomes with small print and too much detail, or those which seem to have the authors political slant. "Retribution" comes to mind. If you've enjoyed reading books about Tarawa, Guadacanal, Peleliu, Okinawa, Iwo, then you'll appreciate what Hopkins has accomplished.
